Fairing vent color match
« on: June 12, 2016, 01:09:50 AM »

Not if a CVO. Seems HD not making a painted version to replace the flat black plastic fairing vent in CVO colors.

So buy some paint and have someone spray the vent so fairing is one nice color in that area....nope not selling 2014 cvo paint colors

Dealer said looks like you can get some touch up paint but you would need to buy panels for anything else....

Great. My bike has black plastic in the middle of a the fairing and buddy spent 10k less gets to match his.

contact joe z at xtreme dimension painting.  he does great work in matching cvo paints.  many of us here on the forum have used his services and are extremely happy with the quality of his work.

:2vrolijk_21:    I'm assuming we're talking about the bezel on the front of the fairing.  If so, you can buy one for $30 MSRP, send it to Joe, have him paint it and send it back.  Part Number 29200007.

Jerry

I think I understand what the OP is saying though.  For the top of the line bike, first that bezel should have been color matched from the factory.  Second, since they were too cheap to do that, they could have at least made a color matched replacement available.  Of course they would have charged way more for it than it's worth, but that's true of all their painted parts.

I assume when you said "they are not selling CVO colors" you were talking about Harley? No different than Ford or Chevrolet, they also don't sell paint except for touch-up. CVO colors available at PPG Paint jobber or any body shop that MIXES and sprays PPG products. Use the formula for your color and match is, so far for me, exceptional and I have done paint work on all Harleys I have owned since 2000.
Apparently HD has at times, and still does for some colors sells paint. I was talking to a local parts dept mgr @ HD dealer. He has been around for 30+ years and says this is part of HD's attempt to suck in unsuspecting people by telling them they have to buy HD paint, oil, fork fluid, brake fluid etc. and we all know this is not true.
Todays paints, whether Axalta, PPG or whatever are systems. You can not just buy a pint of paint and spray it and be done. You need correct color base or sealer, right # of coats of color with the correct thinner that is mixed Exactly as specified, the correct amount of flash time between coats, the correct tip on the hi-volume/lo-press gun and the correct clear, which may not be clear at all, some colors require tinted clear. So that is why HD does not sell CVO colors that inc Pearls, metalflake, metallic's, tinted clears etc.
But any shop that can match a GM Pearl tri-coat, Lexus metallic pearl tri-coat etc can match and spray a HD color. Nothing special just requires training.

I was trying to buy the vent pre-painted at dealership, but only standard bike colors are available. Most run around $100. Some slightly more.

I have bought quarts of Harley paint from dealer before, but CVO colors cannot be bought that way, at least "they haven't released 2014.." colors yet said the parts guy.

Buying the vent trim does not get you the same thing as the painted part. The center piece. the "splitter" in the middle, is another part attached to the vent inside the fairing, just the outside oval shaped piece is all you get. When purchase the $100 pre painted standard colors, there is an added center "cover" which goes over the unpainted plastic splitter left behind when the stock oval one is removed.

SO even painted, unless you disassemble more to take into painter, a center black piece will remain.

Then the cost, how much for the stock oval , ship to painter, labor to paint and cost of paint, ship back, ...  close to that $100, Hog discount of 15 percent so $85 cost at dealer, pre-painted and walk out door no hassle...

just thinking we should be able to buy same part as a Limited or Streetglide owner could buy to match their bike...

I agree Will, it would be nice to be able to buy it already painted and it's a bit strange they don't offer CVO colors for them when they offer CVO colors for many other parts.  Perhaps the CVO painted parts vendor can't keep up?  Those parts really should have been color matched as standard equipment IMHO.  That is the normal way to do things with the top of the line models for most cars and trucks and bikes.  I was just offering up a way to do the same thing yourself if it really bothers you that much, and I didn't realize you'd also have to buy the other piece as well.  Trust me though, if Harley did offer it for a CVO they definitely wouldn't sell it for $100 like they do for the standard bikes.

Looks like they (HD) took your suggestion and the vents on 16 CVO models are painted.. Problem solved , just buy a new bike. Gotta love HD and their marketing team.
I did find the same problem when i tried to get paint for my 16. According to two dealers HD won't sell it and won't paint parts even if i pay for new ones from the factory. And even if they did I'm told we can't get the paint here in California .

My bike is Palladium Silver and Phantom Blue and matching that paint is going to be tough I would think..

Good luck

Joe at Xtreme Dimension can do it...he painted parts for my '15 ultraviolet and molten lava and they came out perfect!
