07 Smurf Problem HELP!!!
« on: February 10, 2007, 06:42:44 AM »

I took my 07 Smurf in for its 1,000 mile service, rode it home last Tuesday and now it wont start..dead . :help:....  I turned the ignition on, (lights came on) once but starter wouldnt engage.  NOw the bike wont do anything, no alarm status light. no radio,  no nothing.  I looked at the Maxi fuse and its fine.  I also checked the battery and its registering 12.85V ( I put a trickle charger on it tonight).  Something similar happened one time before, I went on a ride, stopped at the 7-11 and wouldnt start, let it sit 10 minutes and it started right up.  Not sure if its an alarm problem, is their a way to reset the alarm? Any help to this CVO newbie is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you need to take it back to the shop.

Make sure things are tight down at the starter main terminal post as that is where all the feed for the bikes electrical system starts from. You say your lights come on, but they draw allot less amperage than what a starter needs to crank.
Also check that the little green solenoid wire is in place. If the connection is poor there, the solenoid won't pull in to engage the starter.
And one more thing, 07's won't start in gear like the earlier bikes did. You may have a problem in the neutral start switch. Does the "N" light show up on the dash?

If you have covered all this already, I would say its time for the dealer to hook a trailer on the service truck and come over for a visit. ;)

Hope this helps,
JD

Turn your ignition off....hold your mileage reset button while turning your ignition on (with the engine button set to "run")....

This will put your bike in diagnositcs mode:

You can scroll through all the settings - I am not a tech, but you click on each main setting to see if there are any four didget codes.  call your dealer if any of these have a code posted and ask what it means....

HOpe it helps a bit..

Simple things first...make certain that the connections to the battery are tight on both sides.  It's a 10mm bolt on both positive and negative.  If they are not good and tight, it can deal you fits.  Check the connections on the starter from there.  If all that checks out, have the dealer come and get it.

You must also pull in the clutch handle on the '07s for them to start! Most people don't realize this! ;) Hoist! 8)

Hmmmmm, I though I read this somewhere but my jester will start in neutral without pulling the clutch in - just like all other Harleys I've had.

Thanks Guys got her fixed  :carrot:.  I called the service dept, they told me to disconnected the battery let it sit for 20 minutes, reconnected the battery and it fires right up. It seemed like the alarm needed to be reset, if it happens again I'll take it to the dealer.  I could have also pulled the Maxi fuse and let it sit.  All the connections at the battery and starter were tight.

I read it in my owner's manual too Jerry. Since I've always started all my bikes and cars that way, I wouldn't have noticed that it starts without pulling it in. I'll have to try it without just to see if they're FOS! Good info on the alarm Ken. Thanks. ;) Hoist! 8)

Warning - Don't trust the neutral light when you do this as that's not always 100% accurate. I didn't but I did witness someone not pulling in the clutch lever and starting there bike thinking it was in neutral. Luckily he had long legs and was quick on his feet. It was funny chit (after he got it stopped) watching the bike spin the rear wheel and his long legs keeping up before he could get the clutch pulled in or the motor stalled out. :huepfenlol2:

Howie,
The 07's will not start without the clutch pulled in, if the bike is in gear.  If it's in neutral, it will start without the clutch pulled in.  I've done it a couple of times on the SEUC and it works that way.  I've also tried starting with it in gear and the clutch out, and it didn't start.  I do like that feature.  I've been guilty a number of times on my previous bikes, forgetting that I've left the bike in gear when I've stopped it because it's on a slight hill or whatever, only to get on it and crank it up without pulling in the clutch.  Fortunately, I'm 6'4" so all it did was lurch and make me look like an idiot in front of everyone else.  So I guess you could say, they've made the '07 for people like me, "idiot proof".

Agree, do NOT trust the green light.  It is just a switch and can get out of adjustment/malfunction.  I usually straddlewalk my bike out of the garage anyway so I know it is in neutral before I fire it up.
