Ear Buds for Music
« on: July 30, 2016, 07:02:19 PM »

I just bought a few items. One being a Bose noise cancelling set of ear buds and a cord adapter to plug into bike

No intercom or answering phone but sound is beyond description. No bike noise unless I hammer it or shifting up through gears from a stop. All sound is canceled out. It's freaky. Loud noises like horn or truck are still there but at low level. Almost too low. I won't use these except on interstate.

As for music I set bike at about 3 or 4 bars. Like so low you never play it there. The Harley headsets are 7-10 usually and still hard to hear after hour. These are like sitting in quiet living room with head set on.

Bike has Vance and Hines power duals and high output slip ons. It's loud. Still nothing with Bose system

This is how bike should come.

Used with no helmet and do rag, half helmet and full face with Harley headset already mounted. All fit fine.
Give a better review after 3000 mile Sturgis trip

Not cheap.

If you are using j&m Corp headsets
http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=HC-ZHD-S
will allow the use of earbuds with full functionality.

Not sure why you are comparing a set of in-ear buds to a HD head-set as they are two totally different approaches to sound, but i am glad to hear the Bose units work well, I had looked at them for when I ride alone.
Thanks

I would be comparing them as a reference to something known to most. Didn't see the rule where only exact items should be compared. Are different colors allowed?

I didn't see any comparison to HD headsets, but did see where he used the ear buds while wearing a full face helmet with HD headset mounted on it.  No comparison.

Bakon thanks for the good tip. I picked one up at Best Buy before I headed to Sturgis this morning. Charged it for 15 minutes while I finish packing.  I spent the first 90 miles trying to convince myself that this was a good unit as I paid $250 for it. When I stopped for gas I noticed the noise canceling  feature on the battery had been turned off. I turned it on and continued down the road. Holy crap.  This thing is phenomenal. It's quieter than my truck. There is no wind noise even with a 20 mile an hour cross wind . I can just barely hear my pipes. A couple of times my RPMs were at 3500 to 3800 because  because I couldn't hear the motor and should have shifted. They are so quiet and I don't need to turn the volume up very high. I wear a modular helmet.  After 400 miles the fatigue level that I usually have was not there. That in itself was a big plus. I only wish there was 6 inches to 8 inches more cord. Bose hit a homerun with these.

I find the same problem with shifting. Either up or down. They really block out the noise but without any head gear the wind noise it alittle too much for me. I like them best in the modular helmet

Those Bose noise-canceling ear-buds really work, but they do have side effects: they cancel so much of the wind noise and exhaust sound that now I can hear the valve train noise perfectly.  I'm going to try the large tips to see if that helps block the rat-a-tat valve clatter.  The only good thing about the valve noise: I know it's time to shift!  >:(

Any updates on the Bose ear buds and how well do they fit in the ear. Does anyone have a problem with them pulling out when you put a helmet on.

Wore them out and back to Sturgis. Would recommend. They helped to take some of the fatigue from noise out of the trip. About 1500 one way for me. I did not wear the entire time, but when I did it was a more relaxing and "less wear" on me part of trip. I switched to a plain cheap ear buds or none at all. Actually only used cheapo a few times. If I was wearing something, it was Bose.

I do recommend a helmet, without one there is a lot of wind noise the Bose still cant cancel. No big problem putting on and off, they are small enough to stay in ear if you take your time. I wore the wire inside my shirt, down to the connection to bike. This connection is weak point. The female to female connects don't seat plug entirely right. Pulling the earphone plugs out a hair gives more volume and richer sound. I tried very small o rings to set the male plug out a little with a slightly better result. Still had to mess with it and then hope it didn't move. This was on highway or would be too much work and too big a distraction in the city.

Overall it would seem some PITA parts and cost would be negatives, BUT THE PAYOFF IS WORTH IT. Highly recommend. Read a review where a guy (BMW rider) replaces his set from wear every couple years and finds it worth it. I would say the same for long trips, not day rides.

After using the Bose buds some more, I've found that there's a lot of wind noise when riding with a half-helmet--in fact, so much wind that it's a problem.  They're much better with ears covered.

After a recent 1800 mile trip I concluded my new J&M speakers do not enhance my stereo music experience AT ALL. I'm on a motorcycle after all and was unrealistic with my expectations. I started looking into in ear monitors (IEM) and focused on Westone and JH Audio. I think I settled on the Westone AC20's due to the reasonable cost and dual driver configuration.

My real concern is blocking too much noise where my situational awareness is compromised. I know I can't have the best of both worlds but looking for hearing protection, quality audio and little lose of important sounds has become difficult. I will certainly look into the Bose unit a little more.

Being an audiophile and motorcycle rider together SUCKS!

Yes. A 3/4 or more coverage needed or the wind is just too much. Tried half with a bandana covering the ears with half satisfied results. Helmet covering ears is best and almost as quiet as sitting in a car
