For The Wrenches
« on: September 02, 2016, 11:31:10 AM »

Has it come to the point when a customer brings a motorcycle into a dealership, that the customer has been riding for 6 years and 83,000 plus miles and is complaining of engine noises that techs no longer dump the oil? I seem to recall that was the first step, of course that was many years ago.

I brought my bike in was told it was engine knock, I in return stated, then re-tune my bike, it has the Pro RaceTuner installed here, how did the bike all of a sudden lose its tune. I ride this bike in the heat all the time the noises I hear aren't pinging or engine knock. The tech said to use octane boost. When I got home I dumped the oil and was unable to find the magnet on the plug with all the metal shaving on it, it honestly took me 4 hard swipes with the shop rag to finally see the magnet. There was enough shavings to cover the inside of a bottle cap, with only 650 miles on the oil.

My point, the noise worsened, motor started running on one cylinder now they (the dealership) can definitely hear it and the motor is being torn down.

Is this Harley wrench procedure or all wrench procedure with regard to not checking the oil for metal?

To me it's just laziness in general these days and it's not just at HD dealers.  It's easier to tell you it's something else than actually investigate.  When you prove them wrong, you will rarely hear an apology either.

I don't want to turn this into a rant thread but actually, not only are we losing our freedoms every day, there is absolutely no respect for people/things anymore.  People don't care about anything except what's on bookface or tweeter and whether they are "liked" or not.  They are more happy responding to a "ding" or "beep" than actually taking face-to-face with a live human.

Really, they may have never been instructed on dropping the oil first.  They probably gave the "deer in the headlights" look when you suggested it.

Wonder what our "society" will look like in 10-20 years..... :nervous:

Haird tell us how you really feel.   I prefer to you the term "MyFace" instead of "bookface" , it's a lot more fun.

I do have ESP, and I want to see if they try collecting another $50.00, for their not being experienced enough, being thorough, and or simply not giving a rats a$$.

You gonna let the same shop you speak of do the rebuild? Lots of options out there

As TN said, why would you consider using that same shop?  Find a good shop, dealer or independent, that you can trust to do things right.  And yes, I said independent.  ESP isn't restricted to just Harley dealers.

As for the general question posed by the OP, this isn't something new but it does seem to be more and more common in all kinds of service professions these days, from vehicle repair to appliance repair to home repair to whatever.  I used to run into some of the same kinds of people back in the '70's as an automotive service rep, always blowing customers off with the same nonsense we get from Harley dealers about everything being normal.  But as a whole, they tended to be in the minority.  My theory is that as the vehicles (and appliances, etc.) have become more complicated, fewer people are truly qualified to work on them and those who aren't try to hide their incompetence with BS.  One thing we do have in this country is an overabundance of BS artists.

. There are 8 Techs at Red Rock Harley Davidson, no the same one the misdiagnosed the issue in the first place will not be working on it. At this point, I'm looking at having at the very least completely rebuilt 110 motor with a new half case under ESP.

First of all I don't mind confrontation, I actually enjoy it. I hold people accountable, therefore, if you take my money you better earn that money and or be correct in your assessments; in this case the dealership / tech was incorrect and they are going to be educated, obviously Harley University didn't teach this tech enough. There are 8 Techs at Red Rock Harley Davidson and no the same one that misdiagnosed the issue in the first place will not be working on my bike. At this point, I'm looking at having at the very least a completely rebuilt 110 motor with a new half case under ESP. Then when I trade the bike I have a documented Harley engine rebuild.

Best of luck

Is this Harley wrench procedure or all wrench procedure with regard to not checking the oil for metal?

A clue as to the competency of the diagnosis was the suggestion to solve your problem with octane booster...     :2vrolijk_21:

Sorry a$$ed people have been here all along, and always will be.  Had an Ol' Coal Co. Dr., that had an office beside the Company Store in the Coal Camp I was raised up in, as a boy.  Don't care what you said was ailing you, he'd say, "Take a tablespoon of Karo Syrup, (clear), and 2 Bayer aspirin, and you'll be alright."  Some people just don't want to work.  It's just a little worse now.  Later--HUBBARD
