Boom went Boom
« on: September 15, 2016, 02:07:12 PM »

After reading about how the Boom II speakers were so horrible, I was skeptical when I purchased my CVO a few weeks ago. Compared to my J&M Audio on my previous Street Glide, the Boom II didn't sound too bad at highway speeds. Today, the front speakers are blown.... just like I read about. I should just upgrade the whole system, I know...but its 3 weeks old and under warranty.  Called the dealer and they said" You know, you need to break the speakers and amp in, right..." while I am familiar with speaker run in or break in, it is a widely debated topic. I am sure when it sat on the showroom floor they took extra precaution too (not). I would like to believe that I did not abuse the speakers, but I am not sure what would constitute abuse other than full out max volume and max base/treble settings. If that is the case, I certainly didn't abuse the speakers. Base/treble at half, volume about half and less than 1K miles on the bike.

Not being an audio guru but having done a fair amount of audio stuff in the past I have never heard of breaking in speakers and amps? And if the speakers blew at full volume I would say you have a problem. One would think that the speakers, headunit and amp would all be compatible and sized to each other. I mean I could see a 100W amp blowing speakers that are only rated for 50W but shouldn't this stuff all be in sync?

Thanks for the response. I agree about the paring of speakers and amps with proper ratings. Only times I have seen or heard of speakers blowing was overuse and or too much wattage for a speaker to handle.

The woofers, if you can call them that, on my 2015 recently tanked. They didn't sound terrible but you could tell with any low bass that the speakers were coming apart. That can be due to many factors. Recently, I have ridden in some very hot weather. The dealer replaced them under warranty without batting an eye. If your dealer claims that your speakers need to be broken in, ask him to show you in the owner's manual where that is stated. I'm sure he can't find it because it doesn't exist.

More of the same dealer BS.  Ranks right up there with "They all do that."

Dealer had to hear them before replacing. Did it under warranty this weekend without a lot of heartburn. Parts manager said the speakers should be more robust.

Lost the left front speaker on my 14 Limited. I talked to the people from J&M and from Soundz.  I just purchased the J&M Rokker XX system. I am doing the install myself and just removed my radio and shipped it to them for a reflash. Sooooo I hope to be back up and running in a week or so. I know I could have gone to the dealer and let them change the settings with the DT but opted to send the radio out.
