Oils ain't oils sol, Syn3 is it a Sin?
« on: September 25, 2016, 04:50:11 AM »

I was a dedicated Syn3 in 3 holes user for several years, the last year or so I have been experimenting with different oils in my CVO. I would like to share what I think is a good combination and it is a noticable difference, No more clunk when selecting 1st gear, less engine heat and just feels smoother and free er!

Engine: Mobil V-Twin 20w50

I agee, been using the same for lots of years except I use Redline V-Twin trans oil. No complaints on any of them. Use Mobil in everything from lawn mower thru cars and bikes. Actually did some R&D when it was being developed a long time ago for the lab I worked for, It is a good product. Also partially pays my retirement.

I ran Redline primary oil for years, earlier this season I had a narrow outer primary cover installed on my '14 TK, had the dealer use Formula + this time around... Better clutch engagement & I find neutral easier  :2vrolijk_21:

I still run Syn 3 in both my bikes.  The reason being that I'm on the road so much, I often need oil changes during road trips and I like to keep the same kind of oil in my bike and not switch back and forth.  I can agree Syn 3 isn't the best, but it works ok.  And yes many of my trips are well over 5k miles, some over 10 k miles so oil changes are required.,,

I've been running that for a year. Just found LiquiMoly 20-50 motorcycle oil. It's getting changed on Wednesday.

Dave, I'm with you on this.  I carry a quart of Syn 3 with me on all long trips.  It makes things so much easier using the same thing in all three reservoirs and the knowledge it's readily available at any Harley dealer.

Don't get me wrong, all of the reports on Redline, Mobil, etc. are always intriguing to me.  I enjoy reading the praise for products like these with very few, if any, negatives.

However, I may be in the minority (and that's OK) and I've stated this before....for me it's HD oil in the HD bike.... ;D

I have used the Amsoil on my 2009 FLTRSE3 motorcycle since the first oil change, no Primary issues, no transmission issues, however, the engine had to be completely rebuilt due to a lifter imploding in the engine case at 83,696 and I do not believe that was caused by poor oil. I'm riding out here in the Las Vegas heat and it gets pretty toasty on the roadways.

If you so desire you can put the Amsoil 20W - 50 in all 3 holes, which I believe Amsoil to be a better option to SYN3 for me at $9.65 per qt..

Due to the high temps in Vegas this is what I put in my motorcycle;
Engine Amsoil 20W - 50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil
Primary Amsoil Synthetic Primary Oil
Transmission Amsoil Synthetic Transmission Oil

My advise is to learn to change your own oil and change it often before the oil starts to breakdown.  I don't go my mileage.  If I'm cursing the big road everything stays happy....but if I've been cooking in stop and go traffic where the oil been around 300 degrees...time to check the oil.

Just rub some between you fingers or dip a few drops on a piece paper and hold it up to see how fast it runs...you will know if it's starting to breaking down.

Sometimes I go 1.5k and others times 4k between oil changes.

Syn3, Redline, Amsoil, Mobil, ect....all good product....just need to keep it fresh.

Belray in primary

On my 2 Harleys I use Redline in all three holes. I switched two years ago and I have been very pleased. I buy the Redline change package that contains the proper oils for all three holes plus a funnel and a bottle of injector cleaner.

I purchase in on Amazon or Ebay for about 110.00 shipped.
