Was talking to my HD tech the other day about doing my 117 build and got on the subject of Oil pumps. Told him I was going to buy to SE billet high-volume pump, he suggested that i save my money and buy one of these kits from Ron @ Axtell. Said that's what he uses in most all of his builds and was pretty pleased with the results. Just makes me a little nervous to have 10-13 Lbs at a hot idle . Like a little more than that .
Sure this had been discussed before and don;t want to make this like another oil thread. I went to their web site and read up, did some research on some other sites and decided to buy one after i called them, Great folks at Axtell, took their time and thoroughly explained it to me.
Ron says the stock pump is more that adequate for most all of our needs . Problem is aerated " feed oil " Both the stock pump and SE pump are set up to "loop" the bypassed oil right back to the return side in the pump ,plus the stock bypass plunger and seat can leak due to compromised sealing surfaces air bubbles are formed at the feed side of the pump. .He says the hot aerated oil going right back into the lifters are what can make them soft and noisy.
Made sense to me. Mine is reasonably quiet when it's cool, then noisy when hot.Realize there is more to the noises that and it's an air cooled motor .Just wanted to give it a whirl and see if it quiets down a little when warm.
I know there are some very sharp guys on here that really know the program when it comes to this and I may be chasing my tail but what the hell..Have the instructions and commentary will scan them in and post if anyone is interested. . Will report back with pressure readings , noise etc:
