Axtell Oil Bypass Kit 425-103
« on: October 30, 2016, 07:55:10 AM »

Was talking to my HD tech the other day about doing my 117 build and got on the subject of Oil pumps. Told him I was going to buy to SE billet high-volume pump, he suggested that i save my money and buy one of these kits from Ron @ Axtell. Said that's what he uses in most all of his builds and was pretty pleased with the results. Just makes me a little nervous to have 10-13 Lbs at a hot idle . Like a little more than that .

Sure this had been discussed before and don;t want to make this like another oil thread. I went to their web site and read up, did some research on some other sites and decided to buy one after i called them, Great folks at Axtell, took their time and thoroughly explained it to me.

Ron says the stock pump is more that adequate for most all of our needs . Problem is aerated " feed  oil " Both the stock pump and  SE pump are set up to  "loop" the bypassed oil right back to the return side in the pump ,plus the stock bypass plunger and seat can leak due to compromised sealing surfaces air bubbles are formed at the feed side of the pump.   .He says the hot  aerated oil going right back into the lifters are what can make them soft and noisy.

Made sense to me. Mine is reasonably quiet when it's cool, then noisy when hot.Realize there is more to the noises that and it's an air cooled motor .Just wanted to give it a whirl and see if it quiets down a little when warm.

I know there are some very sharp guys on here that really know the program when it comes to this  and I may be chasing my tail but what the hell..Have the instructions and commentary will scan them in and post if anyone is interested.  . Will report back with pressure readings , noise etc:

I think Steve Cole is or already has a new design for the HD low oil pressure issues

10-13lbs is plenty... Only get 14-15 (at the most) with the hi-$$ Aftermarket Pumps & Plates...

I have the Hi-$$ Aftermarket Pump & Plate in the '09 and a new(er) OEM Pump & Plate in the '05, at hot idle both the gauges read about the same...

Sometimes the Aftermarket Pressure Relief Valves can cause fluctuating oil pressures (at steady RPM or at idle) something to be wary of...

Save your money. Pans, Shovels, Evos had less than your TC. My 113" TC has over 100,000 miles on the stock 2004 pump/plate. Never had any oiling troubles.

I know.......   :jack:

I've had this question for some time now.

How much oil do Harley pumps push?

How long does it take to circulate all 4 quarts, approximate minutes?

This boils down to an underlying question of how large do oil lines have to be to not restrict normal oil flow?

Thanks.

I agree save your money.. In fact if you do a bit more research you will find that many have had oil pressure issues with that kit. (I had one here that was set to me to repair had zero oil pressure with the bypass kit)  In my opinion I would suggest the S&S plate and pump . If you want to upgrade. That is a extremely nice plate with features only found in that plate as well the 3 stage pump does a better job of removing the oil from the engine with much less aeration.

Make sure it is fully seated , the dew that I was made aware of that I had to ( fix and remove) where not allowing oil pressure at all on one and the other it would work fine and then not and that one did some damage. We ended up replacing crank.. in the end . It ran for maybe 1500 miles and started to knock. Hard to say as to why other than its a cast plate and a few other shops reported having some issues and having to mess around with it to get it to work.. No issues stop by any time
