Help Design A Slow and Methodical Trip Plan from the West
« on: February 19, 2007, 07:49:22 PM »

Hello All,

I am in Florida. I am going to ship my Cuse2 to the West Coast.  I will fly and find it and ride it home. I am going to stop in Sturgis One Day, around August 6-7.  I am thinking Sea-Tac and heading east.  I would like to have input on some nice roads heading home.  If you offer up suggestions, I will look carefully on a map and try and follow that way.   Half dozen years ago did a southern route, but no way for that time of year, so thought I would stay a bit northerly this time.

Eventually, it would be nice to have a great ride route that works for that time of year in July end and August beginning. .  I have a max of 10-12 days, and after Sturgis would be booking home pretty fast, but for the 6-8 days from WestCoast to Stugis, I think there is a lot to see.

So bretheren familiar with that kinda route, please input.  I'll be looking up stuff as we plot, and ultimately, our distance s and overnights might acvtually result in a close to perfect plan, but the caveat always is, in my mind, that there is no real schedule, no real day to day destination, no rush to get thereitis, but go for the ride, the destinations and the roads.  It's mostley the new roads I look forward to with blue skies, and no traffic, but want to find a town with a bed everynight too.

I'll play ironbutt after sturgis, but every few years, those mountain rides are jus callin out for me.

Rhino... You'll have a great ride and the planning/anticipation is part of the fun.  So much to see/experience and there is much to suggest.

I would put these two rides/routes on your short list...

1).  Cross Idaho heading east from Lewiston on Hwy 12 all the way to Missoula.  This is a classic road and memorable road.  There's a sign at the beginning noting curves for the next 77 miles.  Follows a beautiful river much of the way.

2). If you can find yourself in the Yellowstone area, locate the Chief Joseph Highway (212) NE of Yellowstone and enjoy a perfect road with scenery to match, ascending Bear Tooth Pass.

HTH,

Steve

Spiderman may be methodical, but I have a friend that sure can pick a slow scenic (?) route. ;) ;D

HaHaHa! That map looks like one of my famous 5 Hour out of the way shortcuts!!!! Remember, it's all about the Journey, not the destination!

Bri, I offered all the prop's in the world for your MV trip.  With that list "little shower" you were the man.  And I sure as hell can't say anything about 10 minutes.  I'm the guy that left the barn for class one morning as an undergrad early in the semester and pulled the bike back in the week of finals.  Kinda got sidetracked that morning I guess....  :nixweiss:

Glad you got the lock removed on this thread. I think you'll need to come up w/ a list of "musts" and clearly Yellowstone is on it. If you've never been, you'll not be disappointed. We took 1 day to go through and regret not taking two. We were also most impressed w/ the Grand Tetons. Big big frickin mountains. We enjoyed going down the western side of the rockies in Co. a lot. Million $ highway was very just right for touring two up w/ good, twisty roads and excellent views. The Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mtn. National Park is also a must. Way the heck up there and pretty decent road. This month's issue of the AMA rag, American Motorcyclist, has a pretty good story on the passes of Co. Perhaps some of our folks can testify to the article. The Black Hills surrounding Sturgis have excellent roads w/ good stuff to see. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Spearfish Canyon, Needles Highway, Deadwood, et. al. are all worthy trips / stops. A couple of day trip loops out of the rally will put you on some really nice roads which do great things for your head.
As for the ride home, I just hammer out of Sturgis on 90. No doubt I miss some good things but except for the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers nothing stands out as something worth stopping for. Maybe following the Mississippi south might be a decent route?? Good luck, good weather you'll have a ball.

Rhino, if you are coming to the northwest, ie: SeaTac, you might consider dropping the bike at my dealership in Bellingham WA.

Several members will be shipping to my dealership for the Nelson CVO GTG in July.

Our ride if you are not aware starts in Nelson on the 16th of July http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php/topic,9039.0.html

We will ride there starting on the 14th and 15th depending on routes taken and time spent.

Should you wish to do the solo thing later in the month I will leave the option to ship to me open.  Either way you absolutely must include the North Cascade Highway in your route east.  In July there is no prettier and fun route to ride east from the I-5 corridor.

The North Cascade Highway is a motorcycle riders dream, a twisty string of turns and elevations that rise and fall through some of the toughest portions of the Cascade Range.

The vistas are every bit as grand as the Rockies and the sites along the way are great.  You will come to the town of Winthrop once you have traversed the pass (3 to 4 hours of steady riding from Interstate 5 at reasonable speeds.  From there if you wish to continue on you can work your way east through northern Washington, catch the Grand Coulee Damn and on toward Spokane and Couer d' Lane for an overnight anywhere along the way.

You would be remiss not to include the North Cascade Highway 20 in your trip. IMHO

Yessiree, I can see that this is gonna be fun.  Interestingly, that Nelson Run and Bellingham could be a good start.  I am going to look at the route contributions and roads in the next day or so, and start formulating.   And Dawg, I noted those routes you posted to, but Havana looks a bit difficult.

Thanks, Looking forward to more suggestions as time permits.   I'll check it all out.  This will be quite an adventure, and am looking to it.
