Hey Rhino, I find that the best trips are unplanned. I try to pick some places I want to see. Then look at the map and get on the road. Stop and look for a hotel at the end of the day. The next day, same thing. And so on. Sometimes I never get to where I started out to. Wherever the road takes you. Seeing things locals recommend and meeting people on the way. I'm a believer of the old adage. "It's not the destination, it's the journey!" Regardless, you're gonna have the time of your life. And at the very least, make sure you do the Beartooth Pass, into Yellowstone and down into the Tetons! Have a great trip! ;) Hoist! 8)

Howie, you travel just like I do.  We need to find some road time.

I'd like that Don. At least we'll get to start in HS this Sept. I can't believe it's only Feb and this year is already shot. A trip in every May for our Anniversary, HS in Sept, and our time share in Puerto Vallarta in Dec. That's my 3 weeks. Man I want to retire so bad! Maybe we can meet up in May somewhere. That trip is still wide open right now. :2vrolijk_21: Hoist! 8)

I am suffering right now from a hellish case of spring fever.  It's just nasty.  May have to do a long weekend or three before May.  But May is definitely worth thinking about.

A whole lot of nuthin?  Halfway in between would have to be just about Columbus, OH.  Apologies to citizens of Columbus and its environs, but you ain't just whistlin' Dixie.  Speaking of Dixie though, another roughly equidistant spot would be somewhere around Hubbard's and Otis's place.  Maybe we could make them buy us beverages of choice?

Now that's an idea. Mountains of West Virginia sound pretty good. I've only been through there once, years ago. You got the wheels turning inside my head now Don! ;) Hoist! 8)

Hi Guys,

This whole idea is so cool to me, total irresponsibility for 3 weeks this summmer...  Those routes are pretty cool.  I am not riding for a t shirt, so forget IB rides...hehe.

What I am doing is using a yellow highlighter in my map books.  I think the entire west might be highlighted by the time I finish in one big block if I follow everyones suggestions.  However, I cannot see it all from a bike, as much as I would like, on one trip.  So slowly, I will pick and choose, and yes, nothing will be for certain, except I want to stay on good roads, but off the interstates**, and stop when I like, and find little if any traffic barring my way.

Rhino

** Are the interstates special out there? Because I grimace everytime I got to hit the slabs here, it is insanity.

It's sooo cool to me as well. On our 3 week adventure we had a list of roads and destinations and a some maps and AAA tour books. Kept an eye on the weather channel and went from there. No schedule really except when we wanted to hit The Black Hills Classic. The rest was just on the fly. What a great trip it was!! As for the interstates, we only used them when we really wanted to make time (like going and coming home) and when we by passed Denver. It's amazing to to travel the two lanes out there w/ higher speed limits and little traffic. What really struck us was the desolation and the scale of things. Everything is big and the distances are great between points. A couple of inches on the map turns into several hours on the road. And, there is an amazing amount of just no civilization. Perfect really. What we quickly learned is not to pass up a gas station, damn near ran out in Wyoming, and that you're really on you own as probably most of the area had no cell phone coverage.

Thanks Talon.

Looked at the route from Yellowstone and down to Jackson and over, looks like it's going on the trip must do list. Thanks.

Rhino, once you go that far you might as well hit the Grand Canyon and the Sedona before heading east.

Hey Brian,

If I do CO and AZ, I might as well stay out the rest of the year, if it comes to that. But reality is only a few weeks, and I ain't gonna play IronButt.   I have been to Sedona before, road and air. Their tiny airport is pretty awesome, landing on the top of a mountain they cut off, and after takeoff, you fly past the end of the runway and it drops a couple thousand feet.   I also rented one of those pink jeeps and went off to play up in the hills.  Alos flew the Grand Canyon, before they stopped planes from flying the canyons.  But it has got to be an unforgettable view from a bike....   I will be very happy to see ANY mountain road at this point.....Hmmmm, it was only 75 degrees today, and as we were changing out a friends exhaust, we decided to ride like yesterday, and the day before, and tommorrow. Tommorrow being like 82 degrees,. And tonight, as I was riding around in 65 degree weather, I had to put on a jacket. Brrrr.  (read this and weep Scott)......

Let's see, next weekend I am at the NHRDA drags in Gainesville, then bike week is here, and the bands and the parties. Chit, to many rides, and so little time...
