Tube in Tubless Tire?
« on: June 11, 2017, 12:03:41 PM »

Back tire was flat this morning - found a screw in it.  Tire is almost new and has about 2500 miles on it.  Hate to throw it away, are there any reasons not to just put a tube in it?

Got a finish nail in the back tire on my NEW '01 RK on the way home from the dealer. I put a patch in it and a new tube (it had spoke wheels) and rode it till it wore out. Few years later put an emergency plug in a tubeless tire when about 90 miles from home in the dark. Forgot about it, a couple months later while doing warranty work the dealer guy called and said "You know your tire has a plug in it?" I did replace that one as the plug was leaking. Promise everyone else on this site would replace the tire, me not so much depending on the size of the hole and the damage to carcass inside the tire.

If the screw was in the side of the tire it's garabage. If it was in the tread area go and get it patched

Hole is in the tread (almost middle).  Small #6 screw.  Plugged it just to get it to hold air.  $140 for a new tire, $30 for a tube..............

Big patch for extra structural strength plus tube.

My theory is that on a car, patch/plug it, you still have 75% of your tires left if it fails.  On a bike, you only have 50% left, and no cage, and I don't like those odds.  $140, I'd have a new tire every time.  Just part of the cost of having fun.

With that new of a tire depending where the injury is, I would use a patch plug which would require to dismount the tire to make the repair from the inside, also I would not exceed 80 mph after its repaired.

I have no issues whatsoever with a properly patched small nail/screw hole in the tread area.  Tube is added insurance but not needed, and would prevent you from plugging another hole in an emergency.

I would agree you could probably plug it but with my motorcycle I don't take any chances with the tires. I ride two up and don't want and issues with tires.  I would replace it.

When properly installed these work great and will outlast the tire. I've had them installed in trucks, cars and bikes with zero problems at any speed

Well, it ultimately comes down to your comfort level. The safest obviously would be to get a new tire. I myself would stick a rope plug in it and ride it until the tire is worn out. I've done that for years with both bike and car tires and never had a problem. Others have claimed to have issues and worry about the safety aspect. I think the middle road choice would yes be to put a tube in it. If you're going to the effort of removing the wheel though, I'd go ahead and place an internal patch on the hole as well.

It's your call. If you do choose to get a new tire though, I'd gladly pay you $10 to take that old dangerous tire off your hands.  ::)

New tire - not an item worth skimping on.  It's dangerous enough out there without adding to it over a few bucks.

I just don't see the "danger" factor here.  If the tire tread is good with low miles and there's a clean puncture hole in the tread area, a properly installed patch with rebalance is a sound repair.  From a practical and cost/labor perspective I wouldn't repair a tire worn 50%+.
