« on: August 06, 2017, 03:47:32 PM »

Just wondering if the Zumo 595 LM is very good at finding hilly curvy roads to ride?   Thanks Billy

Your description says you have a 660 unit. What does it not do that you think a 590 will?

I'm looking at buying the 595 LM and was trying to find out if the curvy road part works very well. Thanks Billy

I've got a 595 now and have had a 660 in the past.  Didn't have the 660 for but a year or so.  Enough to make a comparison though.  The 595 is a better unit.  The internal bells and whistles that are added are both obvious and beneficial.  They will get use.  As to specific differences in "curvy road" finding.... well; not so much.

In the 660 you can deselect certain road types from the routes you want the unit to build.  No great difference after the fact if you do that.  The link below doesn't address specifically what you're asking but does offer a decent comparison of the two unit.

Do you have any issues viewing the 595lm during daylight hours? Even with the brightness set at 100%, mine is much dimmer than the old 660 or 550.

I totally agree. I complained to Garmin about my RT Zumo 590 having this problem but after comparing it to same model some friends have it is 'normal.'  In my opinion Garmin really screwed up on this. I've kind of gotten used to it but don't like it. The map display on the BB infotainment screen is much better but unfortunately it's GPS function is not nearly as good as Garmin's.

I just double checked and mine is a 590 rather than a 595.  So while I'm assuming they're the same screen I don't know this absolutely  Unit dimensions are different but display size is the same between the two.  On mine I don't recall having a particular problem there.  Like any of them is the sun is high over my shoulder shining directly at the unit it's a problem.  Aside from that not so much.  I've thought about getting one of the little sun shields for it but it's never been quite enough of a problem that I've actually pulled the trigger.

Interesting, the garmin that came with our '13 RT as well as the one that came with our '16 GS are both brighter than the 595lm. I guess I need to compare it with other 595lm's, I can't read the screen with perscription sunglasses and barely without them.

Been told if your sunglasses are polarised it will be very difficult to see the screen. People smarter than me say polarised glasses are dangerous on a bike as they camouflage oil/fuel/wet spots on road and make gauges difficult in the sun. That I cannot commit on, I wear full face with tinted visor, not polarised.

Same here - modular with internal sun shield that is not polarized. Screen on 590 still hard to read in bright sun.

Now you all have crawled inside my head and made the rocks roll around a bit.  I'd not ever thought the screen on my 590 was too bad.  Maybe it could be better though.  So just bought this:

Maybe knocking glare down a bit will be an improvement.  Some day later I'll play with it before and after and advise.

Looking forward to your report. Hope it helps but from my experience it's not just glare on the screen. It's more an issue of the screen just not being bright enough when the day is really bright and sunny. The ambient light just overcomes the screen.  But under the exact same conditions the map on the BB screen looks great.

Interesting, may have to try one myself as it's only $9 shipped. I was looking into one of those velcrowed shade pieces, but they are kind of funky looking.

I almost bought one of those also Simon.  The sun on the screen is at its worst when its over your shoulder and directly on the screen though.  This is the same time the shade would do you absolutely no good.  So I'll try this other material first.  Might be a mistake.  Won't be the first time.  Hell, I even had the temerity to comment on Harley Davidson in a public thread on an open chat site about Harley Davidson last night.  So I'm all about the mistakes.  :huepfenlol2:
