Thinking about a Toy Hauler Trailer
« on: August 22, 2017, 11:51:01 PM »

Came back from an East Coast (Canada) trip, and after spending all that coin on hotels, I starting to think about maybe picking up a toy hauler. Me and the misses used to love tent camping, but wouldn't want to go these days unless we had a trailer. We do one big bike trip in the summer, and I usually trailer the bike with my enclosed 5 x 9 trailer.

If I did get one, I would plan on using it several times a year, and could even use it on a weekend up in cottage country (2-3 hrs away), and it would be like camping with the bonus of having the bike along too.

After numerous hours of research on-line, I decided on either the KZ Sportster 100-210TH, or the Venture RV Sporttrek 190VTH, which is actually made by KZ. The KZ is a 21 footer, and the Venture is 19 feet, and they weigh between 4,000 - 4,500 lbs. I decided I don't want a 30+ footer, since they cost a lot more, weigh more, and are not as easy to haul and maneuver around. My tow vehicle is a 2016 Dodge Ram Express, regular cab 2WD Hemi, so it can tow up to 10,000 lbs.

I looked at all the other brands like Jayco, etc, but I like the build quality, floor plans and features, and options with these 2. I'll wait until the RV show in Feb to hopefully see them in person, as nobody around here has either in stock at the moment.

Any advice or comments from anyone with a toy hauler?

I also want one and will get a good used one when I find it. I personally am not getting one to save money on hotels. By the time you figure purchase price, deprecation, fuel, maintenance, insurance and then paying to park it somewhere it is cheaper to get a room. Especially if you don't use it a lot. If you like camping go for it just don't expect to save much $$$. Good luck with your purchase and let us know what you get.

We picked one up last year and absolutely loved it. Actually we wound up purchasing two last year. First one worked for a few months and like everyone else we just wanted something bigger. This one isn't a year old and we are ready for something bigger yet again.

I tried to get my last one, first.  LOL

Take a both of you guys might want to look at the Grand Design toy haulers.  They have several lines of toy haulers with different trim levels but more importantly is their reputation for the factory standing behind their products......huge in the RV industry!

Mine is in the Momentum line up and can be seen here......   https://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=111630.0

Mike I don't know how you can afford to haul that thing around. Mine weights 16,000 and my truck really will not do the job. Its an old F350 dually with the 7.3.

That 427 will take a TRUCK to safely pull it. Lots of stuff will pull it but it will take a truck equal to it's heft to handle it without white knuckles. I have pulled a 48' Car trailer with living area & 1' extra height loaded to the gills and it take bones, lots of bones to deal with it in normal traffic on the interstate not to mention wind on a curvy road. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just wrong. A F-250, 2500 GM or Dodge will not do it.

When the wife and I where looking for a toy hauler I found this place and we both liked them.  http://aluminumtoyhauler.com/  Many different layouts and options. Life happens and changed our course of purchasing. If we ever start looking again it will most likely be one of these.

Thanks for all the input guys. Wow, those are some nice TH's- look like luxury condos inside.

I'm wondering about buying small and wishing I went bigger. The biggest I'd go might be the KZ 280THR. which is a 28 footer and weighs 6,370 lbs. That goes for about $35,000 here. The KZ 210 is $29,000, and the Venture Sporttrek 190 is $25,500, which is the one I'm leaning towards.

Best bet is to see them all in person at the RV show coming up in Feb next year.

And yeah, it probably doesn't save money vs hotels really- I'm probably trying to justify it a bit. I will just have to picture how often we would use it for camping and travelling.

SOmething that long you would think they would go with triple axles, pulled a youtube vid of that floor plan, very nice !

Weighing in at 10k dual axle is sufficient. My other 38' is a triple axle, I did that for more brakes...
