vance & hines true duals and thunder max with auto tune.
« on: February 24, 2007, 09:42:18 PM »

Thinking about installing vance & hines true duals. Already installed vance & hines slip on mufflers and thunder max with auto tune. From what I have read the longer 02 sensors for the thunder max system just hits the top of the trans shift top. Is any one running these and could may be give me a measurement from the 02 sensor mount to trans cover.

If concerned about placement why not get the lesser expensive set of pipes without bungs installed and a separate set of bungs.  Then just install them in the best possible location for clearance and fit.

Running the Rineharts, regarding sensor install, I had to remove the header pipe, and then install the sensor, and reinstall. The clearance was tight, but it does not rub. As far as the V & H, can't help, buy RINEHART.

The problem with O2 bungs installed by the pipe manufacturers is that they are designed to accommodate the bike manufacturers sensor.  The Zipper's sensors are longer and therefore may interfere with other components when installed.  For this reason I sent my Reinharts to Zipper's, they mocked up and welded the bungs to preclude any fitment issues.  I was fortunate in that my pipes were only 7 mos old and did not have O2 bungs installed, but I believe that they can still do it on new pipes as the location Zippers prefers is closer to the cylinders heads than stock anyway.

I want to do exactly this too.

In another thread, http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php/topic,11073.75.html where the question came up, Chief said:

"The first time I heard of this, the fix was to thread something, (18x1.5 bolt) into the bung and change the angle of the bung so it doesn't hit the starter.

I have never seen it firsthand, just passing along what I've heard."

So if anybody has done this, I'd like to hear about it!

I can't speak for the pipe manufacturers bungs, but the Zippers bungs have a shoulder that is only long enough to penetrate the pipe wall and accommodate a weld bead.  I don't see how you could bend these without distorting the pipe wall itself.

I think that bending the bung will indeed distort the pipe wall, but hopefully v. slightly.

Just installed Vance & Hines true duals. Only problem is 02 sensor hits breather nipple on trans top. What I did was to relocate breather, moved it up on the top of the cover instead of coming off the angled side. If you remove the top cover you will see that their is webbing inside so it will not cause any problems, its in same location just on top now about 1 inch foward of original location. Drilled pilot hole then used 21/64 th drill bit and 1/8 inch pipe tap. used a allen pipe  plug to block original hole location. looks ok when finished. 02 sensor has clearance. But is close. No problems with the front pipe. If you are using factory sensors their is no clearance problems.

I personally did'nt like the true duels....with that tight bend on the rear jug...had more back pressure,,, so when decelerating you felt it through you foward more so then the stock header..just my 2 cents

Interesting...I've got the true duals on mine and didn't notice that...in fact it runs smother than my previous Ultra that had the stock headers on it.

I have replaced the factory exhaust with the v&h true duals and oval slipons. I did have to move the starter breather hose as described above for the stock sensors.

I ordered the thundermax with autotune Monday.  I was told it would ship in 5 to 10 days...... we will see how Bike Week impacts these dates (they would not pull out of all the inventory they had set aside to go to Daytona  >:(   )

Zippers says I may or may not need to remove the headers to install the new sensors as they are a little bit longer than stock.

I will update the thread after I install the hardware.

Hi Norm, just so I get this straight, you are using the 07 V&H Dresser Duals with 02 ports, and the ThunderMax Autotune wideband 02 sensors, and all you needed to do is move the breather 1" or so forward to give sufficient clearance.  Have I got that right?
