I was on a Road King last week in which the owner had installed the HD six speed a couple weeks before.   Gears 1-5 sounded about the same as we're used to.  6th gear, however, was really noisy.  He had Reinhart (sic?) pipes on and I easily heard the 6th gear rattling away over the exhaust.

He doesn't have the thin Syn3 in the tranny either.  Is using the Redline heavy.  It's shifting feels ok.  It's just noisy.  The only other HD six speed bike I've ever been on was exactly the same way.  I'd thought perhaps that it was "just this unit" when I rode the first one.  But the two sounded and felt exactly the same.  So I'd now doubt it.  Just for me personally the racket in 6th is by itself enough to keep me from being terribly interested.

Now what do I do?  First of all thanks to Wiseasp who gave up his spot for me so I could get my Red SEEG2 at MSRP.  Sat down with the dealer to do the usual - adding extra chit to the bike.  We discussed the pros/cons of the 6 speed - price versus actual use.  For me, I want it 'cause I do a lot of 75-85 mph cruising.  But do I go Baker or HD?  I like the idea of the 2 year warranty if you buy the HD, but I'm really not too crazy about all the noise that box seems to make.  I've heard few complaints about the Baker and I'm really leaning that way.  I'll see if there are any more posts before I decide for sure.  Thanks for everyone's insight. The six speed choice seems to be (often) more about choice than need.

I totally agree with twolane, What you want is the main thing, But it would be a Baker, I have met Bert, he is a sharp guy.  The kind of guy u just believe what he says.

Hey Twolane and DW - I think what you guys are saying is: If you simply have to have a 6 speed, get the Baker.

When the Seeg first caught my attention I assumed there would be a 6 speed along with all the other CVO add ons. My experience with my Heritage running pretty high rpms at about 80 made me think that the Seeg would really benefit from a 6 speed. My feelings now that I ride one are that we are sacrificing some low end power to run less rpms at cruising speeds, the old trade off. This is accomplished by running a (fairly high) 3.15 final drive ratio. If they would have put a lower final drive ratio along with a 6 speed that would have been sweet, but they did not.
My Big Dog came with a Baker 6 speed and a similar final drive ratio to our bikes and 6th gear was useless, unless you were cruising at or above 80 mph. I hardly ever used it. When I ran it through the gears hard 5th gear was good well beyond where I wanted to go and cruising on the freeway I was always shifting back and forth between 5th and 6th. So I lowered the gear ratio and now it comes off the line like a rocket and gets into 6th at about 70-75 mph, just like it should. And the Baker transmission... awesome.
Getting more power out of our bikes is a common topic on this board so a change in gear ratios and the addition of a 6 speed tranny would be the best of two worlds for some riders. I highly recommend a Baker transmission if you do the change and if you visit their website Bert does a great job of explaining final drive ratios.

Leave it to you Naitram.....to be on top of the game first.

We knew it was going to be out this year, we just didn't know when.  Now, we do!

I just came back from my dealer and I stand corrected on a couple things. First, it is less labor to install complete trans ($499) than to have just the gearset installed ($640). Also there is a new catalog that has been mailed out that shows gearset at now $1799 instead of $1999. They also dropped the price of side cover for hyd. clutch to $199 from $299. They did this because depending which side cover you need you get. Thats good because you save a couple hundred bucks. However, he called about the warranty to see if covered under ext. warranty and he got a "yes it is" answer. While we were talking about this the service manager came up and he said thats NOT what he heard so they called back again to get names and a written confirmation. Thats when we got the "no its not" answer. They said they were responsible for what came with the bike and that is 5 speeds! They would cover under the 2 year standard warranty and thats it. So there is no advantage of getting before I try out the bike for myself! And last the manager said he has had a customer about a louder 4th and 6th gear and they went with standard oil in it and still had it! So Twolane you are absolutely correct! So I am no longer confused on this issue and will be able to sleep tonight. [smiley=laugh.gif]  JR
