I would like to lower my 06 SEUC... how do i do it?
« on: March 03, 2007, 12:25:25 AM »

Hey Guys....

Id like to lower my 06 SEUC...  im about 5'6" and 150 pds... I can handle the bike no problem and can be flat footed if I stretch a bit but I think if I could just lower it a little it would be awesome!!

What would be the easiest and cheapest way to do it?  Thanks for your help guys!!  Cany wait Im taking my bike to work in about 7 hours... time for bed.

Please let me know....  oh and whats up with this legend air suspension? How does that work?

Thanks
Michael

In the rear different shocks or other types of "lowering kits."  In the front a rebuild of the springs in the forks.  Alternatively check out something like the Legends air suspension kits.  The you can lower the bike for on and off and raise it back up to ride.  TC and a few others here say they're the best of both worlds.

I'm 5'8", with a 29" inseam...I put the Legends on my 06 and solved several problems with one shot.  They are not a cheap product, but your other options, unless you do the work yourself, are going to cost you well over half of the Legends.  The Legends drop the back of the bike 3.5 inches, so you have a solid foot hold for walking the bike around.  They also offer some degree of travel, even lowered, though I would not suggest riding with them lowered as a general rule.  The beauty of the system is that you can put them wherever you need them to be for any given situation.  They are a far superior shock over the stock, IMO.  The ride, with two people and a load, is where they really come into play.  You can adjust them to any point at any time, for the road conditions, or your need to get a bite with your feet.  Very easy to install.  They are pricey though....

I would not use the HD low profile air shocks, the SEEG's and SERK's come with them standard and many have swapped them out fro the Progressive 440's. The best bang for your buck is to get the lowering blocks for the rear, you keep your stock shocks and retain the full travel.

I have used these for several people with good results:

Easiest and cheapest way is:
1.  Step off the bike (after stopping).
2.  Put the kickstand up.
3.  Let go of the handlebars.

But, If you want to spend a little money, Progressive 440's on the rear and Progressive front lowering kit is what you need.

What kind of work does it take to lower the front?? Arent my stock screaming eagle shocks already lower than standard harleys?

Can I just do the rear lowering kit and leave the front alone?  Would that mess up my handling?

Thanks

Hi electra88,
The 2004 & 2005 SEEGs had a lowered suspension. The 2006 & 2007 Ultras have stock height suspensions. If you look at the SEEG section you will find lots of posts where they were very unhappy with the lowered setup. Many changed to the Progressive shocks and others spent the money for the Legends air shocks. If you have the money I would go with the Legends so you have lots of ability to adjust the bike to suit your needs at the moment.Such as parking lot maneuvers and getting on or off the bike. You could then raise the bike to ride and regain the ground clearance and suspension travel to absorb the bumps in the road.
I don't know about the long term effects of lowering the back without lowering the front. I predict it won't have much effect unless there was several inches difference from the stock geometry. To lower the front you would need to install shorter springs in the forks.
But one of the site mechanical geniuses will know more than me.

To lower the front you'll need different springs. There have not been any adverse handling issues with just lowering the rear.

hd-dude installed the lowering blocks on my 06 ultra and they work great. No handling issues at all. Works perfect with full gear and 2 up. I'm 5'10" with a 30" inseam and I can now firmly plant my feet on the ground. I only wish I'd put them on before my 40 day road trip last summer.

I grind a little more in turns than I want to now, so I dont think I want to lower mine at all. I have the legends, but they are not installed yet, The legends will keep it high , like stock on my '06 correct????

Like Ed used to say: "You are correct Sir"!!  The Legends will keep the stock height and maybe a bit more, so you've got to get her bent over good to grind...

I have the Legends on the rear and the Progressive lowering kit up front - I usually ride with the Legends dropped about 2" from stock.  The Progressive lowering kit up front dropped the front height about 1 1/2".  Just about right for my 5'10"  - 30" inseam size. ;)

Well I went to Harley and bought the blocks by burly to drop the rear.... he had a pair in stock and said they use them to lower bikes all the time.  Now I just need to pick up a motorcycle jack from sears and do the install. It doesnt look to be to hard.  Ill let you guys know how it goes...

Thanks
