Why CVO????
« on: March 08, 2007, 12:11:29 AM »

Newbie here......

just wondering,

why did you purchase a CVO?????

I tried search but could not find what I was looking for....

If this question is to personable, no problem.... :bananarock:

I'll start....

After 20 years of ownership of a Construction Company, our company had a VERY profitable year. My Partner has been salivating for a HD ownership (BTW, were Bro in laws), me personally I was never interested in street riding (been riding and racing dirt, MX for over 30 years & still do). My Business partner brought the proposal to me (after my middle son 19y/o purchased a new 06 Deluxe).
So I told him, make sure you buy two............... :bananarock:
My partner likes to one up me on whatever we get together, so he shows me the 2006 HD brochure and asks, which one I'd like...I looked in the back of the brochure and checked out all the prices and PICKED OUT THE MOST EXPENSIVE bike I could find.... :bananarock:
....his reaction..........that's the same bike that I want....LOL. Buy TWO then!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So now we go down to purchase??????? Well we found out , After all the sales personell stopped laughing, these are CVO's and are hard to find!!!!!!!!!! I called three states, then we decided to put deposits down on two future CVO's at a dealer near us. BTW, this dealer wanted 5k o/MSRP, but for guaranteed we obliged. (a large portion of dealers were asking for over MSRP) His color came in first, which he picked up. Mine was due 4 weeks later. In the mean time, another dealer called(my sons dealer) and I won a raffle to purchase that bike......... which was MSRP!!!!!!!!!!!! :bananarock:

guess what I did with that 5k difference...................... :confused5:

NEW CUSTOM PAINT
:bananarock: :pepper: :pineapple: :cucumber: :jalapeno: :apple:

so yes, we had 80k to burn ............ and yes.......I use mine for work a few times a week while traveling to estimates...saves on fuel economy...  :) :bananarock:

Welcome to the "Club!"  While Ol' Maudie ain't a CVO, I've yet to see a CVO pass the Ol' Girl, when she is stretched out.  I've justified to my Friends here, and abroad, many times over, the actual cost savings I have accrued on fuel consumption, not to mention the return on my pleasure of being "In The Wind", WFO.  I conclude the 50+ Large, I have invested in Ol' Maudie, puts me way in the Black on this deal.  :2vrolijk_21: Later--HUBBARD

Hi rmarion,
I am sure there are many different opinions on this subject on this website.
First my story.I had been riding street motorcycles since the 1970s and got my first Harley in 1997, I rode it for 9 years and enjoyed it but I wanted more power and a little more comfort features than what the Fatboy I had offered. I first wanted the S.E. Roadglide but family budget didn't allow me to purchase one. I admired the Screamin Eagle line and all it's features while I saved money and finally had the chance to get on a list and hope for the  2006 S.E. Ultra. The dealer would not take a deposit but they sold it to me for MSRP after waiting 6 months for it to come in from the factory. My thoughts were I wanted the increased power and features the S.E. line had to offer since if you added up the options it was cheaper than building the bike from a stock one. I also realized that the paint was not a "One Of" true custom paint job but it was limited production and I would only see a few of them at rallies and other events.
Now my opinions about owning a CVO bike or a "One Of" custom.
I did not buy the CVO just to brag and show everyone I could buy the most expensive bike Harley makes. I truly liked the looks and features and I knew in the long run it would save me money to buy it in CVO form. I do not buy a bike simply to try and make money but I realized that buying it as a CVO it would hold it's value better and possibly I would get more at sale as opposed to adding lots of chrome or paint to it and you never get much back on addons anyway.
I also feel that I would not go too extreme on options to add to my CVO since if it was made too personal it may limit the resale. I also didn't feel like spending the big bucks for the CVO paint job and then painting over it, if I was to do that I would have bought a stock bike and painted it any way I wanted. Maybe if I felt a need for new paint on a CVO I would get a spare set of stock tins and paint them and store the CVO tins so it could be restored later.
As far as wanting a truly personal bike I would have gone the route of HUBBARD. I would build the bike with all of the options I wanted and just enjoy riding it and not worry about resale. I did not decide on that route for a bike since I did not have the money to do it all at once and did not want all of the repeated downtime to have the mods done peacemeal. I also did not have the skill ,workspace or tools to do it myself.
I also think that you can only build a "one of"custom if you build a bike with truly unique parts that you or someone else creates alone and not just look at large parts catalogs and bolt stuff together. If you use the parts books you may have a slightly rare collection of parts but don't be surprised to find some bike close to yours or having that "cool part" at a rally since if that part drew your attention  it did the same to someone else too.
rmarion I hope you enjoy your bike and that you have many happy and safe miles on it. Also I hope you enjoy making the bike you own too.

So, if I'm reading the story correctly you got your CVO not because you really cared about the bike one way or the other, not because you had any particular appreciation of riding the bike or even necessarily looked forward to doing so, not because you saw one and "just had to have it," actually not for any reason whatsoever related to the bike itself.  It was just because the in-laws were getting one, it wasn't any fun to be outdone, and there was a need to proclaim to the world "mine is bigger."

Everyone has their reasons.....

Oh how true...when I got my first CVO (RED FLHRSEI) I saw one get uncrated and I swear I heard the angels sing!!!  It was a cloudy day....as the box came off the top of it the clouds opened up just enough to let a beam of light about the size of the skid through and shine directly on the bike...it was like the floodlights were turned on just form me.  It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen...except for my wife of course.   ;)  Went home and told her I just HAD to have it.    :coolblue:

We can all hope and pray that after riding it he'll come to appreciate it....

Cheers, J

Oh if only I had that kind of money to burn.  The possiblities.  I'm getting excited just thinking about it.  I got mine because I loved it and it was the best bang for the buck.  I put well over the cost of a CVO into my '03 Ultra and it still wasn't as good.  Resale will hold better as well.

I wish money was no object...I would have bought two CVO's then, an SEUC2 and a SERK.  I bought mine because it's a CVO and I immediately liked everything that came on it, especially the 110 ci engine.  When I priced out an Ultra with all the things my CVO came with, the total cost of the bike came close to $42K...I wanted that limited edition color, that CVO badge on the tour pak....for me it was "I want it, I gotta have it" at first sight.  :orange:

Okay, I've lurked long enough, thought it was time for me to join in.

Here's my CVO story.  I haven’t owned a motorcycle in 27 years.  My wife and I always rode together, 2up.  She occasionally made the suggestion I should get another bike, thought we would both enjoy it.  I started to look for a bike several times in the last 27 years, getting serious.  My problem was that I work in a job that exposed me to people who have been injured, some quite seriously, many by motorcycle accidents.  There were at leat 6 or 7 times I was serious about motorcycling again, along would come someone who reminded me that, when our when our bodies do battle with the road, they often loose.

The last time was this fall.  Started looking again for a bike.  Once again, same thing happened.  But this time, I decided that I wasn’t going to let a few badly head injured, multiple fractured souls keep me from that feeling.  Hey, let’s face it, you take a chance every time you step out your front door.  I’ve finally accepted the risks.

We were visiting friends who just moved to Northern AZ Thanksgiving time.  We rented an EG classic, rode around the red rocks of Sedona.  I was hooked again.  That first ride after 27 years, it was a total eye opener for me.  Motorcycling has a feeling of total freedom, not too many things give you that feeling.

Okay, after that ride, I start looking at EGs.  Then, I buy the Ride Like a Pro dvd to sharpen up my skills.  This motorcycle is all about the wife and I together, she’s precious cargo.  Great DVD.  If you haven’t seen that DVD, there are two 2005 SEEGs.  A red and a yellow.  That was it, saw those bikes, had to have one.  No question in my mind. There was a yellow one within 100 miles of home-showed the wife, she likes red, red it is.  Found one in upstate NY, my brother in law did the test drive for me.  Had it shipped (damage--another story). Took my first ride on the bike last week.  I'm at one with the universe again.

Like others have mentioned I priced out what it would cost to build my own bike using a lot of the parts that came stock on the CVO's and decided not to go that route. I had friend that purchased an '03 SERK and after seeing/riding his bike I had to have a touring bike w/a 103ci motor. When I found out in '03 what the CVO's were going to be for '04, and looking at the SEEG I was sold on getting a :pumpkin:. I was blown away by the color and just had to have one, but this was just the starting point. Since owning it I've made it my "custom" by adding a few things. Even though I'm not finished totally customizing it to what I want I don't see me getting rid of this bike anytime soon. With all the restrictions that are now being imposed on the newer bikes makes me even more happier w/what I got.

i bought a CVO so i could start this web site  :zroflmao:

ok, seriously i bought my 02 SERK because it wasnt a boring balck stock road king with no personality.

i bought it for the paint

i bought it for the 95" motor ( big for H-D in 02 ) ( and cause i couldnt go from a 113" S&S softail to a stock 88" twinkie )

i bought it for the little things like having the wiring inside the handlebars ( nothing cleans up the bars better )

i bought it cause it had everything from the factory ( well maybe not )

i bought it cause it was the first factory H-D that grabbed my attention and made me want to buy it
