Why can I not buy "Black Ice" paint?
« on: March 09, 2007, 08:47:32 PM »

Does anyone know why you can't buy the "Black Ice" color for my Jester?  I can buy the touch up for $32.00 but the stealer said not the paint.  I've been doing some "choppin" on my new bike and could use the paint.

They will not give you the paint numbers or supplier...if you've got a CVO, generally you've got to produce a damaged part to get a new one painted by the factory.  You might try taking it to a body shop with a computer to match the paint...some have had success doing that.

I do not think that process will work with three stage or pearl finishes.  Also, the distinctice metallic in the Black Ice will be difficult.  :nervous:

It's actually (new) the filler strips that I had holes cut in...not the originals.  So I wanted to match the paint on the new ones with the mods.  I'll try the NAPA thing, that sounds promising.  I had a local body shop paint them and they look so so, but I would like it to be the right paint.

Is this paint restriction for the first year only or will they never release the paint?

They normally use PPG paint.  You can thru a body shop get the painy codes.  My buddy did a great job on a 2003 Anniversary Gunmetal paint job for lower fairings.  One thing about a bike, there are not too many pieces thjat touch and therefore must be a perfect match.  Even with the exact can of metallic paint, the color can vary due to the painter, distance from the piece, temperature, air pressure, etc.  Certain paint like the anniversary Silver were painted with a unique process that will be hard to duplicate.
On our CVO SERKs, the frame is powder coated and the body pieces are not, so there is a color variation from the factory anyway.
That's why Black is such a nice color.

The paint on mt '07 SERK appears to be Vivid Black. It's sitting right next to my '03 Vivid Black RK. The Black Ice, I thought referred to the paint scheme-everything else they do to the paint. My paint is not metallic. There are marbled sections, special pinstriping and pewter leaf flames. But the paint looks like regular Vivid Black. Is this not the same on SEUc"s? I'm mounting hard bags on mine and am having them painted at the end of the month. What am I missing here? Hoist!

Hallelujah to that Don. I can't believe they expect you to tour with those worthless POS! I guess they figure people spending that kind of $ on a bike won't ride 'em much! And then they can control their W.....ty costs that way. Boy are they wrong about that, huh!!! ;) Hoist! 8)

Howie...are you sure?  I'll bet you that the paint on your SERK is not Vivid Black, but contains a bit of silver...

Have you compared the two out in the bright sunlight?

Terry, I had them both out today, and even asked my wife, who's a Graphics Designer, to look at them together. They both look the same to us. We can't see any difference. I even took one of the hard bags off my '03 and put it on the '07, to see the color difference, which fits fine BTW. There is no apparent difference what-so-ever. That's per me, my wife and my daughter. We all agree, we don't see any difference at all! I don't know about SEUC's, but anyone with an '07 B/I SERK can use Vivid Black as paint, the best I can tell. Custom Paint my ass! Another HD parts scam? ;) Hoist! 8)

The Black Ice SERK that I saw outside had "chrome" flakes in it and also had sort of a brown pearlescence to it in the bright sun.  Take a look with a flash light.  It is definetely not Vivid Black.

Howie,
That's what you get for getting a "Monday" bike.  ;D :D ;)  They painted it vivid black and not black ice ::) :P...There are noticeable silver flecks in the black ice, at least on my SEUC there are...if you have black ice, they should be there.

Well you know Red, I can't see any difference between the two, nor do I see Silver specks in the solid Black. How tiny are these speckles? Any other Black Ice SERK guys see any Silver specks in the Plain Black areas? Could it be that subtle that we can't see it? The only thing I can see them referring to as "Black Ice" on this paint job, is the "Marbled" looking areas, which are painted within certain Blue Pinstriped areas. They have Silver mixed in there, Silver marble is more like it, not specks. And you know what, I don't care! Now it's easy to match the paint on most of the bike! Custom Paint Code, my ass! ;D Hoist! 8)

Howie,
They're not big specks, more like sparkles when the sun hits them just right.  Maybe I'm just having flashbacks from the '70's :P  Oooops did I say that outloud? ??? :-X
