LICENSE PLATE RELOCATION ADVICE
« on: March 10, 2007, 04:17:04 PM »

My Dealer(Dock Gate 20 in Southampton.England)  is ordering the parts to allow them to relocate my Number Plate above my Brake Light and tidy up my rear fender. He has suggested a new Brake Light with a clear section on the top to light the plate and the removal of the ugly HDI mount.
My question is what trim would look best to go at the bottom of the fender to hide the hole from the old mount.
Any sugestions would be appreciated.
I am looking to pick my new bike up before the end of the Month as I have a 3 day trip to the World Superbikes at Donington Park all set up.
Many Thanks

Baresark,
There seems to have been a long pause after you posted your question. I wonder if you haven't left many of us here in the US scratching our heads a bit trying to understand what you've asked. Can you explain to us where the factory number plate location is on EU bikes. Here in North American, the factory "license plate" location on the FLHTCUSE is above the taillight. Does the EU version come with the number plate located below?
I'm attaching a picture of the factory US location. Is this what you're trying to replicate?

Here's what I think you're asking about. This is the medalion the comes in the hole below the taillight on US bikes.

Thanks for your reply,s to mike L and ezrider4.
I should apologise as I should have posted pics of the HDI license plate mount.
I will go to the dealer tomorrow(not that I need an excuse to have another look at my bike!!)and take a picture of the problem area so you can see what I am up against.

I believe this is the way the HDI license plate is mounted.

It's not my definitive license plate, (temporary registration)
The definitive license plate will be mounted with a chrome frame.

The choice of Mike L is fine because the light is included.
Another model is interesting solded by Custom Dynamics :

License plate holder with full spectrum LED whites that give a clean look (H.I.D. type) to your motorcycle license plate.   Frame dimensions: 7-3/16" length x 4-1/4" width
Mounting holes, center to center: 5-3/4" x 2-13/16
(Fits Standard 7-3/16" x 4-1/4" License Plates)
Mounting Hardware Included
**FULL FRAME WITH LEDs**

Chrome Die-Cast
Item: 8201-52

The link : http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?action=post;topic=11742.0;num_replies=9

It's not necessary to change the stock rear taillight.
The light for the license plate is include in the frame.

Thankyou for Fired00d and bisounours input on this.
Firstly Fired00d's pic looks right to me apart from the chrome number plate light .The Tail Light on mine(if my memory serves me right) has clear section on the bottom to illuminate the license plate. My bike certainly has the ugly chrome bracketry above the stop light. The dealers idea is to mount the plate on this to hide it.
They also presumably are looking to supply me with the US stop light with the clear section above as per ezrider4's first pic.?
The first pic by bisounour of presumably a stock glide doesnt ring any bells. The second and third pic I think is similar to what the dealer intends to supply me .I assume the trim at the bottom of the fender was chosen by bisounours.?
The illuminated license plate holders sugested by Mike L and bisounours look really good but in the Uk we are required to have really big license plates, So I will have to check what is possible.
I will go to the dealers tomorrow and take some photos of the bike and some closeups of the rear fender as the license plate is not being made until I choose my Registration number

No, he's got the ugly HDI licence plate mount.

Here's what I did.  You don't need the little cloisonne medallion, I just liked it.  Any standard fender tip goes straight on, lighted ones just plug in to the socket where the ugly number plate light plugs in.  The number plate is a car sized one (height wise) and I cut it to the length of the braket.  Don't forget you need to add a reflector too. As you can see, I used the little strip that comes on the bike, and cut a recess into the number plate for it (though you could stick it on top of the plate if you like).  As an alternative the standard rear reflector from a Sportster will fit nicely where the cloisonne is on mine. As you say, you need to change the rear light lens to provide illumination for the number plate.  The price of that will make you say "HOW much???" even more than usual!

Finally, don't forget it's illegal and you are likely to get stopped by Plod!  ;)

No, James - yours is exactly like the pic the d00derator posted - that pic is a UK bike.

The first pic by bisounour of presumably a stock glide doesnt ring any bells.

Again, that's exactly how they come in the UK.

I assume the trim at the bottom of the fender was chosen by bisounours.?

Yes, any fender tip fits.  I went for an illuminated one, Jacques didn't.

The illuminated license plate holders sugested by Mike L and bisounours look really good but in the Uk we are required to have really big license plates, So I will have to check what is possible.

There is no way to fit a number plate up under the tour pack that is legal in the UK, so you might as well be hung for a sheep instead of a lamb!  ;)
