DynaSoar,  I have just read about the accident. I hope the finger and all other injuries heal quick and without complications. I was chatting with you about your fuel smell . The  missing nozzle on the rear cylinder oiling galley caused the pain you are feeling now. You were exactly right with your gut instinct reguarding the smell.  There are endless lessons here for so many people on so many levels. I have learned one very important thing in my 30+ yrs in this biz and that is to listen to the customer very carefully as they always are aware of the problem. Sometimes the explantion isnt as insightful due to lack of knowledge of mechanical terms and such but usually they dont complain for no reason.  What a long and hard road to get that peverbial  FREE LUNCH!!!!    speedy recovery and Im glad your hear to share :2vrolijk_21:

DS, from your description it sounds much more serious than previously mentioned. When you get the oppertunity, please post the pictures.

Here we have an excellent opportunity for a dealer to shine and show that they have made good. What a wonderful accolade that would be and I'm sure reward them with increased business from this site.

And 2J, thanks for lightening up a little. I was starting to worry your blood pressure was going up. ;D

Now why would you think that? Guess everyone now knows one of my "buttons". lol. But seriously, thanks for the concern.

TJ, while on DSP it is ok to play with one's sel....   Wait, that didn't come out right.  While on DSP it is ok to play with eac.....   Wait just a moment; more problem potential there too.  Ummm; while on Double Secret Probation generally screwing around is not only expected; it will be graded for skill and enthusiasm.

I could have sworn I mentioned playing with others in my post and not playing with "one's sel..." You are making DSP sound better and better. Do you have much experience with it? ............ DSP?

O BOY!

Can't wait to see Don's response!

T/J
I'm on DSP myself and eagerly await a response to determine if I'm missing out on something!

Wow, a lot of people replied!

I have been working with the dealer most of the day. The guy I talked with yesterday is apparently new (this isn't my normal dealership, but one close to where I crashed). The owner of the dealership called me this morning after he found out what I had been told yesterday.

He apparently lurks here and other boards and asked if I could refrain from naming his dealership until this situation is resolved. I plan to give him a chance and will respect that request for now. I mentioned that I'm a member here.

Then he drove almost 100 miles to my house and drove me and my brother to his dealership.

Great news, DYNO. I hope you are recovering physically and emotionally.  Besides the bike, I would be looking for a new pair of shorts!
Seriously, the MOCO is responsible for the mechanical problem, but once you brought it to the attention of the dealer, the responsibilty shifted to them.  If you had not tried to get it fixed, only HD would be on the hook.  In a tough legal battle involving litigation against the dealer and HD, I wonder if HD would throw the dealer under the bus for not finding the problem you brought forward. :soapbox:

Enjoy the new ride.

We looked at the bike with two of his techs. One of the techs stated "...the rear jug is missing its gallery outlet." I have no idea what that means. I probably should have asked. I'm sure someone here can explain what a gallery outlet is. ( I was thinking art store)

I told them about the fuel smell in the oil. The techs both agreed that was because of the BROKEN rings in the rear cylinder. They both looked at the pipes and saw the layer of burnt Syn3... also accounted for by the broken rings.

The inside of the rear cylinder was purplish-black. The ceramic on the spark plug was dark brown at the bottom and faded to white towards the top. The heat-shield on the rear pipe was a pretty metallic blue and there were sags in the pipe where it started to melt. I also noticed the front cylinder was oily, while the rear looked bone-dry.

As for the rest of the bike, the right side of the tank is smashed. The forks are bent. The front wheel is broken. The bars are bent. The throttle grip is missing. The right foot-peg sheared off part of the frame-tube when it contacted the road. The air-cleaner cover is smashed. The pipes are flat. And the rear fender is curled under and sticking into a flat rear tire.

I was told that the important people at H-D are now aware of the situation and that I need not worry. He told me that I should have a brand new bike as soon as feasible. I should also have a loaner by the weekend, but it probably won't be a SE anything.

So far, I've been treated as I expected to be. We'll see about follow-through.

I fared better than what one would think after seeing the bike. I wasn't expecting the rear wheel to lock up like that. It caught me off-gaurd and I didn't have time to pull the clutch. Shouldn't it have free-wheeled? Oh, and I got a free lunch out of the deal.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll keep you posted.

Explanation the dealer gave sounds reasonable - new tech @ dealer did not get to the heart of the matter.

Dealer response at this point sounds ok - new bike and figure the bills get paid as well.

My experience with Harley so far has been that overall they have been fair on most issues that arise.

DynaSoar, I am really happy to hear that the tone is going the way it should have from the start.  Communication is what it is all about and usually where the breakdown is, the "new guy" should have obviously involved others from the start but the dealer is now doing his best it seems for damage control.  I'm sure he can see the sign on his dealership reading "DynaSore's" Harley Davidson.

I must commend you on taking a civil approach to all of this so far.  In this day and age of Litigate and ask questions later, patience has paid off.  This is not to say litigation wouldn't have been the way to go if the dealer hadn't come around.

I imagine in addition to the new bike, paying the bills and a loaner you could be looking at a few goodwill $$$ from the MoCo as well.  It will be interesting to see if they offer anything up beyond the bare necessities that your situation calls for.

Best of luck with it as things move forward, we're all pulling for a positive outcome and your getting back in the wind.

Just left the Harley shop here (Charlotte).
There are two Jesters in the service department with heads and cylinders off the motor.
1 B/O and 1 R/B both with the same problem.
Contact on the rocker box covers and an interesting note, on both motors the gap on the rings were lined up.
Service tech said this was common on the 110's.

And WOW, I have never seen such a short piston. Not much skirt at all.

That's scary.  You can only scratch your head and wonder how things like that happen.

Is it possible that the labor unrest maybe to blame? ( Not paying as much attention to detail) may be a factor? I'm very glad that you are well and staying on top of HD be sure to get everything in writing as conversations can soon be forgoton.

I think they will take care of your issue as you may have more of a legal recourse than you think at this time.

Good luck
.

Has anyone here ever heard of signing a 'confidentiality agreement" between myself and the MoCo?

Have known of it being requested.  Ask them what keeping your mouth shut has to do honoring the warranty.
