Why don't you buy new?
« on: May 20, 2025, 06:04:31 AM »

I'm curious what causes people to keep the bike they have and not trade in on new.
For me it's the quality.  Yes, my 2015 Limited had it's fair share of well documented problems but I I've fixed those. Why would I want to start over? HD can't get some of the simplest things right yet only issue a recall if a zip tie can fix it. The other reason for me are the paint jobs. I want one that looks custom and find most, not all, underwhelming for almost a decade.
Why have you kept yours?

I’ve kept my 1995 flh because I set it up with a 6 speed and S&S motor and the factory didn’t have what I wanted.
My 2019 limited also the same reasoning as again the factory didn’t have what I wanted.
My 2000 Heritage is closer to stock than the other ones, but so much more fun to ride that I’ll keep it.

bikes are over 100,000 miles and with proper maintenance should last longer than I can ride.

The other bikes were sold over the past few years as I’m down sizing and just keeping the ones I ride on a regular basis.

The plus side is that insurance and registration are cheaper as the bike gets older and THATS a plus in Gavinfornia.

Harley for now quit making the CVO Limited.  The Street Glide Ultra is not a suitable replacement IMO.  So I will keep what I have and ride on until Harley puts out a product that interests me again.

I would be exactly the same.*  I'd only ever want to replace my '14 FLHTKSE with..... an FLHTKSE.  Just my opinion - one man's meat is another man's poison after all - but I think the Road Glide is the fugliest creation known to man.  Street Glide, as you say, doesn't cut it as a replacement.

* But HD have lost the plot with pricing, and I would not, under any circumstances buy a new bike at the prices they are now.

My 2013 CVO Ultra Classic is the most reliable Harley that I've owned in my 74 years on this planet.  I've rode almost every state on it and most states more than once.  The paint schemes the past decade or so have NOT been unique and custom that the CVO models were known for, for the first decade.  And.....the cost for what you get, the bang for the buck is just not there for me!

I'll keep riding my 2013!

Had mine for 11 years and have it set up perfectly for me.  With the exception of the 2024 CVO SG in Orange, none of the new bikes really appeal to me.  There are a few older ones I would like to have like the 2013 CVO RG Skunk or the 2011 CVO SG in orange or green.  Aside from all that, I really don’t want to start over customizing one to suit me.

Some little things that came with my 2015 Street Glide:  weather proof Bike cover, Sirus XM radio, heated hand grips ( those failed and no replacement really miss those I know I can replace with after or other harley options but they don't compare to look of the original.....

When the new bike you kind of like is 70K out the door you ponder many things....70K for 2 wheels & 2 cylinders...no, more automation complication buggy software and subscription b.s. no, a little more HP and a little better suspension I can add for a couple of (K) pass!  HD is their own worse enemy, they talked me out of buying new.

Exactly my point and why I asked the question to start with. They can't even get carplay to work right and don't even offer Android Auto. I'm going to replace the head unit with a Soundwave V2 and ride it for 10 more years.

My thoughts are the same and the new style batwing fairing and dash is looking more like an Indian, although the shark nose looks nice but not a fan of the big screen and all the new electronics.
On the standard models we now pay a premium for what use to be in the standard color range  :nixweiss:

Skunk was a 2012 CVO Road Glide, had one.  Really the only CVO that I had big regrets trading.  In my opinion best looking CVO ever.

I would have kept my 2016 limited as I liked the color, but, alas it was in an accident and I traded for a 2017 limited due to an upcoming trip already booked and there wasn’t enough time to get the 2016 repair done. Dealer did his best but it took months to get all the sheet metal and associated parts in.
The 2017 was a lemon from the start and the color was not that great. Dealer helped get that returned and now I have my 2019 set how I want it. Color I can live with, but the drivetrain is VERY nice with a little help from my friends!
(Thanks Dave for the input from your 2019 build, it helped with my decision what to build into my motor! LOL)

2019 with over 100,000 miles and still running strong.

JCZ my sediments exactly. My '13 is the silver edition. The last of the old style inner fairing. I don't need the "infotainment" system. I usually don't use my radio. Our paint schemes are #1 with me. It's paid off and less electronics to worry about.

I'm a motorcycle junkie for the past 50 years, lol! Ridden as many as 30k miles in a year and never less than 10-12k miles when work was all consuming. Owned 30 bikes give or take over that time. I'm on my 10th cvo since 2004 (50/50 new/used) and my current bike is my all time favorite harley. I intend to keep this bike till I turn 70 in 4 years and then buy my last cvo. It wont be new, there are too many low mileage garage queens to waste that kind of money.
