HB - the GPS has no map feature, which makes it marginal at best, IMHO.

Do you know if the stock amp will fit in the fairing?  Likely I will go the Hogwired route when moving it but if the stock amp fits, would be worth considering.

Couldn't have said it any better than Chief.

CB,
Sounds like you're loving life right now and definitely have a plan to move forward.  That's great to hear.  My major complaint with the nav system was that I thought it didn't give you options on what type of roads you wanted to use.  I found out by playing with it, that it does.  When you're setting up the route, there's an option button called "methods".  If you push this, it will ask you if you want to maximize freeways, tollways, ferries, etc.  Once I found this option, I'm happier with the GPS system now.  The not having a map displayed is not a non-starter for me.  I don't have time to look at a map on the screen when I'm driving.  I rely more on the upcoming turn screen (giving distance to next turn and such) and the voice directions.  The HK GPS, IMHO, does a very good job at that.  I used it extensively during the trip to York, and it didn't lead me astray.  In fact, when I unchecked the freeway option, it took the wife and I on some really scenic back roads.  I'm happy with it.  Do I miss the color display?.  Not really, like I said, I rely more on the upcoming turn visuals and the voice prompts more than anything else.  Even when I'm using the GPS's in my truck and cars.  As far as the BS screens showing up, I don't know about all the other GPS units out there, but I've got the Alpine unit in both my truck and wife's car, and a Garmin in the other car, and had the Road Tech on my previous Ultra, and they all have those start-up screens.  I think is just a "legal disclaimer" type thing to tell you that if you have an accident because you were looking at the GPS and not the road, we tried to warn you, so don't blame us.   ::)

For me the major shortcoming is that it doesn't allow street numbers or post (= zip) codes.  I can live without the map, it's v. accurate and the instructions are good, but it can still leave you wandering back and forth along a street trying to read house numbers....

Jim,
That must be unique to the European version, because on the US version, we are able to input street numbers, but not zip codes.

I suspected as much, Charlie. Our postcodes even would be good - they cover a maximum of 6 houses I think.  My GPS in the car allows Postcode and/or street numbers, which I miss on the bike.

Jim,
I can appreciate you needing that feature.  Even though I haven't found a GPS unit yet that will take me exactly to a specific address, they will usually get me to within a couple hundred feet of the input street address, which elimiates a lot of unecessary searching.

Cool!  I've never used a TomTom.  I wonder what database they use.  Most of the GPS manufacturers in the states use the NAVTEQ location database.  There's a certain amount on error based on the GPS signal received.  It makes me wonder that if TomTom can get it down that accurate, why can't the other GPS mfgrs? :nixweiss:

Tele Atlas I think, Charlie. http://www.teleatlas.com/index.htm  One thing I would say is that the GPS on the bike seems to be accurate to a few feet (using coordinates for my "home" location) whereas the Tomtom is accurate to 20 or 30 yards.  But I suspect that the actual HD GPS receiver is better that the others I use (a Navman and a Parrot)

Charlie,

Thanks for the info on the Nav.  I'm sure it will save me some time as I attempt to learn it this weekend.  Great bike so far.  No issues. (knock on wood)

Jim,
That's understandable that the "Home" location is spot on, as mine is too.  That's because it is based on, like you stated, coordinates that the HK GPS had determined was the point you were at when you saved that as home.  It's not based on the interpretation of the mapping software based on an address.  I think the errors come in when you put an address in as to where the company that builds the location database actually took the reading.  I would venture to guess that they don't stop in front of every house and do a coordinate set in the database, otherwise that database would be considerably larger than 1.6 gb.  Just my thoughts on that one... :nixweiss:

John,
That's the way I learned to work the system...just by playing with it.  It's more fun that way.  :P  Glad to see the bike is working good for you.  I can imagine that you still have an ear to ear chit-eatin grin on your face.  ;)  I love mine more every day.  It doen't get any better.

I'd guess you're pretty close (no pun intended!  ;) ) with that Charlie, though another thing is that the HD software copes with off-road locations, where the TomTom doesn't, so whereas the "home" location is set by coordinates in both, the HD tells me to turn off road and doesn't say I've reached my destination till I do, and reach the actual coordinates, the TomTom takes me to the nearest point to the coordinates on the road that it knows about.

Cheers,

Jim,
You're right on the mark (pun intended :P) with that assessment.  I forgot that the HK does do off road, whereas your standard automotive GPS doesn't.  (Not that I'd take a $35K motorcycle off-roading.  :o) That would take you right to the actual coordinate, instead of the last available digitized road spot.

Yup, though "off road" in this instance is up the driveway to my house!  :D
