I took my bike in this am for the rear head gasket problem (Republic in Sugarland -- I've had poor experiences with both Mancuso and Stubbs and was told Republic was the best).

Service Writer: Do you have an appointment?

Me: No, I'm here for warranty work - somewhat common 110 head gasket problem.

Service Writer:  Well, we have the best HD service department in the city and we are backed up with work right now, might be as long as 10 days to get to it....

Me:  (I'm taking deep breaths to avoid screaming and holding my arms by my side) well, I can't ride my $35k bike with oil leaking out the head so I best leave it now.

Service Writer:  "we haven't seen any gasket problems with 110s but yours is surely leaking"......

Me: yes,  BTW I have TMAX installed and here are the instructions for re-initializing......

Service Writer:  Why didn't you just get PC3, it works better....

Me: I wanted closed loop system. (I'm now thinking -- should I just drive it back home, rent a trailer and haul it to Bumpus in Memphis 575 miles away????)

Oh well,  If wanted a trouble free bike ownership experience I would have bought a BMW or Wing.......

If you would have bought a BMW or A Wing First off you wouldn't have spent 35K or an Additional Funds on any TMAX Upgrade :)

Where did you Purchase your HD from? Ten Days is not uncommon a Wait for a NON dealer service purchase. I think you got off on the wrong foot when you started your service talk with I'm only here for warranty work. I would have at least showed him the problem first then let him suggest the resolution.

I'm sure you will get it replaced someone in the twin thread has said that the gaskets are being upgraded and are not replaced with the same part.

VAZHOG,

Yes, I am a novice on dealing with dealer services as I learned to do the maintenance myself.  This is the first warranty type service I've ever needed so I probably had an unrealistic expectation on what the turnaround time would be for resolving this problem.

I bought my bike from out of town dealer (College Station, TX) and had less than satisfactory experience with installation of some add on parts at delivery  --- really nice folks but not the best wrenches.

The service manager was out today so I will call him tomorrow and find out if they will replace both head gaskets with the new thicker ones -- hopefully it will be good news.

I wish I only had 35k invested in this bike....    ;D

BTW did anybody get/have the new part number of the head gaskets?

That would be very useful information...  I'd like to make sure my dealer uses the correct part.

I'm so confident that they won't, I'd like to go in prepared with a part number..

Hell, when I took it in to show them, the service writer had to ask me what year my bike was.. :confused5:

F/A

Now that's a piss poor excuse for a service writer!
Get that part # and askfor them to use it!

I guess that is the challenge...

Should one be "demure" and just go along and let the dealer drive a fix or be pro-active to establish expectations?

I've only had disappointing experiences with the services side of the HD side of the business so I'm kinda unsure on how to proceed.

Does the dealer contact HD corp and they decide if both gaskets are replaced or is it a local call?  Do I request upfront?

Your opinions are solicited and greatly appreciated!

Mark, as a straight warranty repair they are only obligated to fix what's broken.  Nothing more.  So if one jug (for example) was suffereing the leak that's all they'd be expected to fix.  Anything above and beyond them is between you and them, them and their conscience, and what they think they can get away with charging the MoCo for.

It's a different deal in a recall or service reported situation.  Recall is repaired or replaced, whether the problem has shown up or not yet, because of the recall.  That lesser standard of service reports, however, is often something they're advised of how to fix with a new part in a manner other than originally prescribed when and if a problem presents.  The compensator nut issue one one example of that.

So if there's been no actual recall that the MoCo has acceded to the only actual obligation the dealer has is to repair what is wrong at the time the bike is presented for service.  We might want more.  But if it ain't broke (yet) they ain't required to fix it (yet).

But if they changed the Part (head gasket), it might be a different thickness, affecting compression. Then I'd expect both Cylinders to be done so they are both the same. Unless it's a direct gasket replacement, I'd want both done. Hoist! 8)

Yeah, but when it comes to warranty what we want and what they're actually required to aren't always the same thing.  Hell, some of our fancy one-off bits could be discontinued and replaced with the more generic "old" part and they're still within their rights.  As long as it's a functional equivalent.  It sucks.  Just goes to show that not all things that do are good.

Thanks for the morning laugh Mark! I couldn't have summed it up better.
BTW, I just filled out my 18 month "ownership experience" survey ... I ran out of room in the comments section...  ;)

I hope you get it worked out - In my area you tend to watch (turnover) of Wrenches and Service writers as a tell tale of how the service department is run.  Your selling dealer would be the first guy to get you back on the road as you bought the bike from him. But I understand the trust factor not being there. Hope you don't have too much down time. Ride safe.

When they worked on mine due to the rear cylinder head leaking, they replaced both front and rear cylinders, pistons and gaskets. At the time, the front was not leaking. They should replace the cylinder if they can't get the oil off of it. The cooked on oil would not come off of mine. So far, no new leaks.  :apple:
