I just took a picture:

 :worthless:

AJ,

That output will drive speakers, it is not a preamp output. I use it in my truck to drive a small marine speaker buried under the console. Can't see it and it is loud enough.

For the 478 just use the mini plug on the back of the unit.

BTW, I just got a 550 to play with. It is neat, but I think I prefer the 478, especially now that I have tried the weather package.

Used the NEXRAD screen quite a bit coming home from Smokies last week.

Duane, I've tried to avoid seeing that so as not to be tempted.  Have read, however, that it's not a real time nor near-real-time display.  Something like 15 minutes or more lag.  For some quick CBs they'd be up, across the road and covering you before they showed up in the display if that's the case.

So, damn I shouldn't ask this, what's the real scoop?  Is it current?  Is it an overlay over the nav map or do you have to switch from one to the other?  What's the monthly charge for the addition?  And anything else that seems important....

For those that have recently purchased a Zumo make sure you go to My Garmin on the Garmin website and set up an account. This will register your unit, and what I found out today when I was checking for map updates I qualified for a free upgrade to "Map Update 2008 City Navigator® North America NT" which is a $70 upgrade. Don't know how/why, but it said it was free and asked if my shipping information was the same as I'd registered with. I'll see if it actually shows up in the next couple of days. I hadn't planned on purchasing this because I had heard that it's better to buy the upgrades every other year because sometime the changes may not be a benefit to where you live/travel.

Thanks Fired00d ! I got the free update as well. You probably saved me a few bucks, I'm sure if I hadn't checked in a period of time I would have to purchase the update. I owe you a beer...

Thanks again...

I got the same thing with the new 2820 Gary.  Went through webupdater to make the firmware current and the nice software said it would sent it to me.

Outstanding!! :2vrolijk_21: I haven't received mine yet, and was concerned that this may be a marketing ploy, and they would send me the disc only to find out I had to purchase the unlock code. I asked this question on the Zumo forum and this was the reply...

Quote
The update DVD will have a green sticker on the back with a "product key" which will enable you to obtain a 25 digit unlock code while connected to the Garmin server.

Haven't received the disc yet, but hopefully this will hold true.

Maybe, maybe not. Might have ended up doing a lot of trial and error purchases if it had not been for the site. Most of the purchases I've made after being here have been spot on. No "error" purchases have been made. Granted I've found more things here that I might not have considered purchasing, but none I regret purchasing. ;D

quick CBs

cloud bursts??

that it's not a real time nor near-real-time display.  Something like 15 minutes or more lag.

Not real time, but only a short delay. You can animate the radar screen, and when you watch the animation in the lower left screen you can see the time delay, starts out at approximately 25-30 minutes and scrolls to 3-5 minutes.

It worked very well for my ride home from TN, knew when to stop, when I could take off my rain gear and when I needed to get the heck off the road - lightning dancing around the mountain tops!

I was driving in in high 90's sun, torrential downpours, high winds, high 90's sun blast furnace, torrential downpours yada yada yada ...
At one stop for fuel the temperature was 101.

And I could see when the heavy stuff was over (no more red & yellow) so that I could get back on the road.

I'll see if I can catch it on video, but I have to wait for the weather to come first.

Is it current?
Is it an overlay over the nav map or do you have to switch from one to the other?
What's the monthly charge for the addition?
And anything else that seems important....

Fairly current, more so then if you stopped and looked for a TV  :nixweiss:
The radar is overlay-ed on the nav screen. You can see on the nav and on a separate weather screen (with other options)
I started with the basic for $10, it sucked and had no NEXRAD. I now have the "fisherman" which is $30 @ month. I'll keep it for the season and turn it off when the bike goes up on the jack for the season.

The 478 with the NT software has "new" clutter on the screen, as you zoom out there is an icon for every airport, from the smallest to the largest, so many that the screen is hidden by little jets

The picture below is on the 80 range, which shows much more then 80 miles, the lowest airplane is near the bottom of Maryland, the red lines in the middle are various tracks and routes around my home (central New Jersey) This is on my list of concerns with tech support.

I would like to see the best of both the 550 and the 478 combined. The 550 is OK, for someone that has not had a more in depth unit, but for me it is lacking. I can pretty much do the data entry with only an occasional glance, with the 550 you have to look at the screen to enter data.

Here's all the info on the XM Weather package. I posted a bunch of screen shots awhile back, but this is where I got them from. Now, if they would put this in the Zumo, I'd have to replace my 2610.

Here's something interesting.  Had the new 2820 on the desk last night to load some MP3s in to it.  Before starting the upload pushed a few buttons and just generally played around with the thing some more.

In so doing did clear the trip and mileage logs that were in the unit.  So it had no max speed or other records set in it.  Then an hour later after handling it some more and uploading a bunch of MP3s happen to take a look again inside the log screen.  The little bugger had gone 24 mph sitting here on my desk :2vrolijk_21: .

Here's a dated review of the 376, with some actual pictures of the radar images. The part that scares me away from that one, and probably the 478 also, is the problems noted at the bottom regarding the screen problems and power connector problems. I don't know how much of that has been addressed in the 478 series.

GPS Information Review of Garmin 376

Here's one I just found on the Zumo 550. Zumo 50 Review
