Gary....I think there is a time factor to get the free updates for your unit, like if they come out with updates within 6 months of purchase date, they are free.  Can't remember who, but somebody got that same courtesy with one of the 2XXX series a year or so ago.  Free is always a good thing... :2vrolijk_21:
I had heard that also, but recently on the Zumo forum they were saying that was no longer the case. :confused5: That's what surprised me when I checked it noticed it was free.

It's not free on mine, purchased about this time last year, just prior to July 4th, if memory serves me.  I'll just wait 'till V10 next year.

For those that have recently purchased a Zumo make sure you go to My Garmin on the Garmin website and set up an account. This will register your unit, and what I found out today when I was checking for map updates I qualified for a free upgrade to "Map Update 2008 City Navigator® North America NT" which is a $70 upgrade. Don't know how/why, but it said it was free and asked if my shipping information was the same as I'd registered with. I'll see if it actually shows up in the next couple of days. I hadn't planned on purchasing this because I had heard that it's better to buy the upgrades every other year because sometime the changes may not be a benefit to where you live/travel.

I'll bet they changed it from 1 year to 6 months out...

That would put it past the six months then. Sorry it didn't work for you. :(

Gary,
I registered mine on April 13th and it doesn't look like I'm eligible for the free upgrade either, maybe I'll call them.

Hey guys (& ladies), I just went to the Garmin site to do the download. Yes it told me that I was eligible for a free upgrade and that all I needed was my 'registration code' which of course I didn't have. I called their 800 # & had the rep give it to me then told him about the scratches in the lens. He told me that his supervisor would have to approve it before I sent it in. I told him about the upcoming Hot Springs trip & he said the supervisor was a big motorcycle rider. That's when it happened. We got disconnected. I figured oh well. 2 minutes later the cell phone rings & it's Garmin calling me back! He said he still had to check with the supervisor but he'd get back to me tomorrow.
I've always known the Garmin had good customer service but, man these guys are good! The City Navigator v8 CD's are on the way, FREE! It's no wonder their stock price is going up!

A question was asked in another thread concerning restoring files that have inadvertently gotten deleted/lost from your GPS. I would recommend that everyone backs up the files from the main hard drive of there GPS to there PC somewhere. I personally have a copy of it on my PC and an external hard drive. After I do any updates and find that everything is working correctly I'll then update the copy(s) I have saved. Remember the GPS is like any other computer based product.... chit happens. :nervous:  Best to have backups to alleviate some of the headaches.

Has anyone tried Novus 1, 2 or 3 to remove scratches?

I used Plexus, same stuff. I use it all the time on my windshield, goggles, etc.
It ruined the screen on my Garmin 478. It looks like there is a protective coating on the screen, and I ruined it. The screen is not readable in certain angles now. this was not a problem on my older Garmin 276.
