HD Race Tuner or Power Commander
« on: December 04, 2003, 08:39:16 PM »

I need to decide which one to buy in the next couple of weeks to get 20% off, I've talked to four different dealers one of which is a power commander tuning center and they still recommend the race tuner. I've also checked out the JP cycles site and got info from them. So this is what I know for sure (I think).
1. The race tuner is more programable although the PCIII is still a good unit and may be easier to operate.
2. The PCIII could be used on different bikes while the race tuner puts a code on the bike so thats the only bike it will ever work on.
3. The PCIII changes the fuel injector pulse signal after the ECU if you ever have any problems with it you can unplug it and go back to the original ECU which I have the upgraded calibration on. The race tuner I did not get a clear answer but I think it actually remaps the ECU and if you unplug it you would go back to stock ECU.
4. Changing to either one of these units should help the problem I have with the backfiring while decelarating but I may not be able to tune it out completely. The upgraded calibration I had installed was the correct one and was installed properly but that puts the air to fuel ratio back to factory specs which is still lean.

Anyone out there have one of these units  installed let me know what you think. I'm not looking to get every possible bit of horsepower from the bike. I don't mind paying the extra $100 for the race tuner if its better but I don't want to pay extra just becuse it's HD.

Im not as educated as you are on the two systems.  My harley dealer recommended the PC.  It seems to be running fine but I am still breaking the bike in.  After 500 miles I will repost and let you know again after I really get to ride the machine.

Starvin I am so glad that you posted this question.

On my Ultra Classic I had the Power Commander and I was very happy with it.  Once it was put on and programmed I never had to touch it again.  A stock twin cam with Thunderheader exhaust and High flow air cleaner turned 76.2 HP and 90.2 ft-lbs. torque with air/fuel at 17.5.

I curious what the other responses will be....especially from the guys who have run both.

change my name from pc103......anyway,
Starvin, i have the tuner kit installed w/ Ness Big Sucker kit, rineharts and it runs great.  It took about 4 hours to complete job due to the rineharts.  You need to go to www.surdyke.com.  It is a dealer that sells the tuner kit for around $360.00.  That's why i bought the tuner kit instead of the PC.  As well as having a HD product tuning the motor when i installed aftermarket products. You won't go wrong either way.

Rineharts sound great, look great and they DO dip the torque in the 2-3.2k range 7-10 ft/lbs.  Although, from 3.4k to redline it will snap ya--as well as pull ya.  My dyno results don't have the most vital result-a/f ratio.  Bub and HD state that it should be a near staight line @ 13.5.   My theory is it runs smooth who care what the numbers are anyway.  This is my two cents

thanks serk and for some reason your first link worked the second one did not. anyway i talked to several mechanics that were trained on the race tuner and I decided to buy it, I did get 20% off for the new bike discount so I ended up paying $367. I think the main reason i went this way is becuse of the data mode where you can put the laptop in your saddle bag and then print out your own chart for fuel to air ratio. With 123 pages in the manual at least i'll have something to read this winter and maybe understand by next spring. I did find out that the race tuner remaps the ecu so the race tuner itself is not actually in use under normal operation only while tuning.

oh ya....the race tuner "reprograms" the ecu for your modifications.  whether one does pipes or major engine work- the tuner will tune the bike right!!  i gotta get ready to shovel..

I'm in Las Vegas right now, but just before I left Sacramento I was able to gleen the tech. difference between the two, from another site.  I'll print it tomorrow when I get back to Sac.  It's quite informative.  I can say at this point, after what I read, I'm inclined to lean towards the HD Race Tuner.

Ive got the PCIII. Im not sure if it is operating properly.  After start up (about 3 seconds) the check engine light comes on for another 4 seconds. Im just starting to ride the bike hard and my first drag start the bike bogged.  Will ride some more and let you guys know how it does but after reading the info the RT sounds better.  The bike has to go back to the dealer for some other fixes, the panacea brakes system has failed and when they rewired the new handle bars the audio control (tone) was inopt.

PS what rpm should the bike idle at when warm..mine is at 900. seems too high.

Cabo you're up mighty early there buddy.

Did you get your bike dyno tuned?  I had the PCIII on my Ultra Classic and I didn't have any problems with it in two and a half years.  I'd certainly have the service dept. take a look at the stall problem.

It should not stall or hesitate the way you described.  It could also be in the throttle cables adjustment.  I had one side (it's a push, pull operation) out of adjustment and it kind of did what you described.  Keep us posted.

Had a power commander IIIr on my 02 road king it would trip the engine code light as a crank sensor code and occasional the bike wouldn't start.  The dealer said it was to much resistance with the extra plugs went with the race tuner problem solved and it runs better. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Screw that damn TFI, I found the recipe to unleash those extra ponies from the 103 engine and it's all Harley Davidson Screamin' Eagle parts.

This package from Harley is 100% Harley "made especially for" the FLHTCSE to get those extra ponies and torque out of that 103 engine.

The bike comes with 100lbs of torque, this has got to help out by unleashing those pipes and letting the bike breath. ;-)

On page 442 of the 2004 Harley Davidson Catalog
Screamin' Eagle Custom Calibrations for 2004 FLHTCSE which works with the following modifications:

1. Screamin' Eagle Air Cleaner P/N 29440-99b
2. Screamin' Eagle Slip-Fit Mufflers 65115-98B
3. (and for the mufflers) Choose your slip on extensions... (For looks of course).

Gotta love it, a custom calibration to program the bike that is tailored for use with the above pipes and air cleaner kit with no "guess dialing" on any TFI units.  It's a home run!!!

Welcome to the board John [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Have you dynoed your bike yet?  I'd be real curious what HP and how many ft-lb torque you're putting out??
