Trying to get out of DC after riding in the parade, the traffic was HORRIBLE and we kept getting hung up. Finally plotted a course through Georgetown. We set out, but with a 4-way stop on every street, all of our motors were COOKING. We pulled over to let them cool down, and two bikes, mine included, read 266 oil temp.
Chief,
Sorry we weren't able to hook up in DC.  I understand you wanting to get out of there as soon as possible after the parade.  I usually don't stay the whole day myself.  I know the road you're talking about and there is a lot of stopping.  Considering what the outside air temp was Sunday and all the stopping you did, 266 ain't bad at all.  That's running about right for that kind of stop and go (mainly stopped) type of traffic.  I have a lot of experience in DC traffic, so I've been there, done that, more times then I care to admit.  Hope you had an uneventful ride home and hope we can hook up in the near future.

Yeah Charlie, we were bent on getting out ASAP. We got up into Georgetown, and the main drag was a parking lot, so we shot over to a residential side street to the North and that's where we found all of the stops. I'll be prepared for next year.

Had an interesting conversation with my dealer about true duals.  He has run them before and thinks they actually add to the problem.  Here's why - the left pipe has to make a really sharp turn out of the rear cylinder and he thinks this is more restrictive than stock crossover where exhaust gas can go either direction.  He said left side headpipes on TDs he has seen are very blue indicating high heat.

Just wonder what you guys think about this and have experienced.  Also from reading above it seems that different pipes, sert/pcIII, etc., may help but these babies are HOT even with that.

I also can't bring myself to remove lowers.  I (and exp HQ) just don't like the additional wind buffeting at highway speeds over say 70 mph that you get with them off.  Guess I'll have to find some asbestos jeans, lol.

For those that are exceptionally concerned about this why not just take the extra step.  Get a set of pipes and have them ceramic coated.  It won't be a panacea.  But within the realm of the pipes themselves nothing would help more.

Makes me wonder what the oil temps would be without the SE oil cooler !  :o  Maybe I can find another cooler to add but it would probably have to be as big as the lowers on the Ultras ;D

Ultra,
That's the first dealer I've ever heard say that.  On my '02, if you looked under the heat shield, the rear pipe (crossover) was blue, so was the front pipe...I actually think, because of the proximity to the frame downtube, that the front header has a sharper bend then the rear does on my duals.  I think that with that dealership, you could have a warranty problem if you go to true duals and they feel that by going to them they contributed to a potentially related failure.  JMHO.

My "Seat of the pants indicator Says true duals are cooler. Sure can't back it up with scientific information.

Sounds logical to me.  Never run TDs so no personal experience.  What about the Fat Cat 2 into 1.  Guess that would move all the heat to the right side for sure.

On my stock exhaust set-up it is the left side that is most bothersome when stopped in traffic.  But I do notice the extra heat even when moving if at lower speeds (say below 45 or so).  This thing is just plain HOT!

No problem with torque or HP.

I do have a little irritation from wearing the neck brace (to prevent snapping my head as I twist the throttle!!!)   :D

I had thought about getting some TD head pipes and having them ceramic coated. But I wondered if the TMAX wideband 02 sensors Depth inside the pipe
might be an issue.
So , I E-mailed that question to Zippers!!! And I have not got an answer yet.
But hey, it has only been 2-3 wks!!!!

Getting rid of the stock headers does help with the heat on the rider as the pipe is not there radiating heat to the rider. More importantly it allows the engine to breath better and the exhaust gases to escape out of the pipes faster thus less heat. With a good system I doubt you will loose low end torque over the stock setup.
I'll let you know next week.  1000mile service TD and KN filter but keeping the stock mufflers.

Agreed.  My unscientific opinion is the true duals eliminate that %#@^&*$ crossover pipe as a heat source.

And the HD mid-frame heat shields eliminates it even futher.  :)  Got stuck in some heavy traffic last weekend and with the combination of the heat shields and the duals, I didn't feel any extra heat on my legs...it was so nice when stuck in stopped traffic and not have my legs burning up. ;D

I have the Kury version heat shields.  Noticed their effectiveness as well.

Spoke at length to some folks from TN at the bridge in Deals Gap last weekend.  One of the guys there was developing a "wind channel" to direct wind around the 96 (or 110) motor.  Had a prototype on his Ultra - directed wind from the lowers to the front and rear cylinders using a variety of removable pieces (to be made of carbon fiber).  Said his oil temps were 215 or so - hot as hell, mid day, after riding the Gap.  He got my interest.  Figure he is developing them for Kury or someone similar.  Gave them a card for our site but so far have not seen any of them post.
