ABS will be an option for most, if not all 2008 Touring models, and most probably standard on the FLHTCUSE3.

Chuck, of course we don't yet know the accuracy of those CARB certifications submitted to Sacramento cited in this post:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=14017.msg226185#msg226185

Since they are the only actual documentary evidence anyone has submitted to date, however, it's perhaps worthwhile to at least see what's there.  The last of the six submissions there show V-Rod models.  Some ostensibly with ABS and some without.

All of those models described as including ABS have a new "A" designator at the end of their model nomenclature.  Every one of them.  So it is VRSCD versus VRSCDA for the Night Rod without or with ABS (respectively).

Going through all the other documents no other models from any other family (including the touring family, including the CVO subset) have an "A" designator at the end of their model nomenclature.  No other model has the ABS noted in the model description as it is for the V-Rod models that have the "A" designator.

Harley's nomenclature has not been absolutely consistent over the years.  It has generally been consistent within a year though; and relatively to a specific item.  If we take those CARB statements as evidence then we have to assume that ABS is finally being submitted to the consumer base initially only on some V-Rod models.

Dynas have often been Harley's test mules for new things.  Probably because they sold in smaller numbers so the potential for damage/cost was smaller while still giving them a large enough BETA test group to learn what they wanted to learn.  V-Rods are also smaller productions numbers now.  So that, and being able to market "better brakes" and "higher performance" together might be the logic behind launching ABS in that family.

None of that documentary evidence, however, suggests ABS in the touring family.  Granted, it is skimpy evidence.  But it's all anyone has seen.  So you use what you've got.

I was interested to see some documentation to substantiate the following claim.

I'd be looking for an '08 parts manual real quick if that were the case.  ;)

Well they have already had the ABS available on the touring platform - for police bikes at least- so it wouldn't be a big jump, but i think it should be just what was stated - an option.

The difference is that the prior ABS option for touring bikes was (hopefully) something that couldn't be used for consumer models.  It was a big and rather klunky unit that occupied more than half a saddlebag.  Really made that bag pretty much unusable for other things.

If the "new" system really is something starting on V-Rods it's got to be smaller.  MUCH smaller.  Hopefully that bodes well for what might move to other platforms later.

I have already put my name down for the FLHTCUSE3, which will be a replacement for my FLHTCSE2. When discussing details a ususally extremely well informed person confirmed the ABS options for the Touring line (not sure on the RK). The same person was right on the spot last year when suggesting the larger engines and the new CVO line-up, which by the way for 2008 he has confirmed as can be seen on the CARB certs. I do like the ABS option. It adds more safety when going on wet roads, specifically with a heavy bike such as the E-Glide. We'll see. Nashville is only two weeks away, and I hope this site will have the first pictures before July 10.

I hope the unnamed, uncited, anonymous source is right. I know of another unnamed, uncited and anonymous source that says not. One of them must be right. Like always, we'll just have to wait and see.

Will not anything for sure until after the meeting in Nashville.

Something about the repeat of the 07 to 08 CVO models just does not sound right.....

That's my thinking here. Seeing the CARB sheets for no change in the entire CVO line-up looks like bait thrown out to stir rumor and speculation. As someone stated earlier, the CARB sheets have been updated before, after the new stuff comes out. You can bet HD knows what they are doing keeping a lid on the real information until press time.

It is a common belief that this site is monitored, probably so, so they know we know what they want us to know so that we really don't know anything other than what they want us to know. I got this from a very reliable source who shall remain anonymous.

One thing is for sure, IF they are indeed going to offer a Vrod with ABS brakes, the controller is going to have to be about the size of two packs of smokes, unless they add a tourpak to hold it.  If you've never been into one of these things, there is NO room.  The Airbox could be more efficiently designed to both flow more air and allow room for the controller on the ABS system.  IMO, this is another step on the Revo platform towards a touring bike to compete for those who purchase Beemers, Wings, etc.  Harley with a true Sport Touring Bike along the lines of an RT?

In reality, unless they do something to increase the efficiency of the stock brake calipers/pads on the air cooled bikes, ABS, while being helpful, would still be woefully lacking compared to other bikes.  With the installation of Brembo's on the V's a year or so ago, they have an excellent braking system on them now...in fact, it's so good that it is very easy to lock up, so ABS on top of Brembos would be a good idea on the V, as well as all the other bikes.
