Clutch Adjustment
« on: December 31, 2004, 07:04:07 AM »

Morning all. Seems I need to adjust the clutch a little (wants to pull while in gear and lever pulled). I'm guessing the adjustment is down low where it enters the cover.  [smiley=confused5.gif]Anyone done this yet? Am I close to being right?  If so; which way; in or out? Thanx.

The clutch adjustment is really a two part process being a cable adjustment (freeplay) and the actual adjustment of the clutch engagement accessed through the clutch inspection cover on the primary.  Without knowing how many miles you have on the bike, it's really hard to tell what the quick fix is.  Often, you will find a small amount of "pulling" when the lever is depressed and the outside temp is cold.  If that is the case, you can solve the problem with adding or subtracting a little more freeplay to the cable during the winter months to find the "sweet spot".  If the problem continues after the bike is warmed up, you will need to adjust the problem out at the Clutch Adjuster Screw inside the inspection plate on the primary.  If you have not had any experence with this, it would be best to carefully follow the instructions in the service manual as the pictures will be of great help in following the procedure the first time.  You might also consider asking one of the HD techs to allow you to watch the clutch adjustment the first time to get the hang of it.  Once you've done the adjustments a couple of times, it is not really a big deal, but trying to "wing it" can get you in a mess.  Best advice is to carefully read the service manual (Section 1-18) and if not comfortable, get one of the pro's to walk you through it.  Good luck.

Since we all have hydralic clutches there is no cable adjustment so everything happens at the clutch with the adjuster in the center.  How many miles are on the bike?

If your talking about a new SEEG there is no cable.  The clutch is hydraulic!! As far as I've read the only adjustment is in adding fluid and bleeding the system.

The clutch is supposed to be self adjusting.  If that's true then it's the rod at your throughout bearing that needs to be adjusted.  Be sure to post here what you find out from the HD tech on this.  Some of these guys have a lot of miles on their Blue and Black already and this is the first I heard of a clutch issue.

My clutch sometimes slips a little when coming off a stop. I did not think that there was any adjustment options so I figured if it persists to be a problem an upgrade in springs or clutch may be necessary. I have read a lot of good things about the variable pressure clutch on another site and they say it works with our hydraulic clutch. I think it mostly helps with reducing pull on a heavy cable clutch but it might be something to check out.

Wonder where BLM found the Clutch Cable on his bike?? The photos in last months Hot Bike or Hot Rod Bike, I can't remember which, shows the pushrod being a non adjustable part that is different on hydraulic bikes vs cable bikes. But the more I think about this, maybe someone who has already been in the primary would no more. Please anyone Know??

Measuring Clutch Plate Lift
1. Attach the magnetic base of a dial indicator to a rigid mounting-point on the motorcycle, such as the left-side rider footboard. Position the indicator to the end of the
clutch-release pushrod.

JC that was my question about how many miles where on the bike,  I've got a little over 18,000 and this clutch is great no problems.  Wonder if he got a bad one or abike built on a Monday or Friday?
