Seats and Hips
« on: June 18, 2007, 07:57:23 AM »

I just bought my 03 SERK about a month ago w/740 miles on it. Amost the same time I started getting extreme pain in my right hip to the point that I could harldy walk. It went away a few days later and just figured that it may have been athritus.

I then sent the seat out to have a Butt  Buffer installed  (it was that or a pro pad but after doing some reading I figured out that ther both the same thing) I do not like anything with gel as it has never helped me in the past and will not spend any more on those type of products.

Well go forward a few more weeks and I rode about 100mi in two days and after I got home the pain has returned and I fear that the bike is doing it, what fun is it if you cant walk or even sleep after a ride. I'm to the point on selling the bike.

I have tried different seats on my previous RK's and nothing has worked, so far I have tried the Sundowner, Mustang, Corbin, Airrider inseat and even the Rusell seat which was very nice as usuall but they could not move me far enough back because of the seat pan design.

I'm 6'2" 265 w/32" inseam has anyone my size ever found a seat that is really comfortable? Again I have never had any problems with my hips and this did not start till I bough the bike.

TIA,
John

I have a "barkie" hip as well and had a seat fit to me.

There is a local guy that builds a seat to fit you personally.

Very involved process, with mine he actaully reversed the bacrest tower to get it back farther and moved me back a couple of inches.  I have a 32" inseam and at the time weighed around 235 at 6'.

He works through the mail if you can't get to him.  Is Alligator Bob near you?

www.alligatorbob.com  Advanced Custom Design, 39442 N Route 59, Lake Villa, IL 60046  He does custom fits as well.

I have heard of him before, he started out doing BMW seats. I will keep it in mind, I just hate to waste more money on the chance it will work, plus the time involved to have it done.

As much as I hate to say I should of know better as I have owned Road Kings in the past and have always had problems with the seats no matter who made them. I did have a Ultra Classic with the Russell seat which was nice but for the most comfortable ride was the Goldwing 1800 with the Russell seat. It seems that the big GL1800 seat pan is perfect for Russell to use.

Not knowing your age........you may be at the age where you are getting arthirtis in your hip or hips and may be due for an artificial hip in the not too distant future.  It may be that the bike just happens to aggrevate it where other wise, you're not experiencing the pain yet.  If that's the case, it will gradually increase over the next year or two, even when you're not riding the bike.  Mine started after I broke my hip in a motorcycle accident.

There are several of us on here with artificial hips and I can tell you that the pain is gone immediatly.  I've never met anybody who has an artificial hip that has't said the same thing.......no horror stories with the artificial hips. :nixweiss:

Hopefully, thow, that's not it and it's just a matter of finding the right fit.  Corbin will custom fit you too, but the factory is in Hollister, California.

Just turning 53 and before I get a new hip I will get a different bike, as I mentioned I have had problems with every RK I had ever owned. I have owned a gew GL1800 w/Russell seats and there was nothing like it, so I hate to say that I will be returning to that. After all what is the fun with riding when you can not enjoy it, the bad point is that the RK was always my favorite bike.

I will just put this up for sale as I do not want to screw around with anymore seats and do not want a new hip. I'm still too young.

Thanks,
John

My reply was just an affirmation of the post JC made regarding a new hip/the benefits of it, and not intended to say that was your problem or what needed to be done in your situation. If you're not comfortable with your bike and can't get it the way you want by all means move on to something that works for you. :2vrolijk_21:

BTW - Age doesn't have anything to do w/needing a new hip. I'm only 49, and started having problems with arthritis several years ago. My arthritis wasn't a result of injury, but several other contributing factors... Heredity, Overweight, and excessive Driving (I drove a bus part-time 30 - 40 hours/week). So don't let the fact that you are a young man think that your hip can't be wore out.

Oh I totally agree with you and I really do not want to start down that path as my insurance is chit to nill. My dad just had a hip done and it was not cheap.

Like I mentioned the Road Kings were always my favorites looks wise and having everything able to be removed is great. I always wanted to get a SERK but the funds were never there.

As a matter of fact I juct purchased a 06 Goldwing last season and had a Russell seat built, I probably put about 500 miles on it when I saw the 03 SERK for sale loaclly with the mileage and knowing that it was in a controlled climate stroage with the sellers car collection I jumped on it.

Now that crap starts, I'm freaking pissed off.

So very true!!!! If it were not for good insurance and sick time benefits from work I'd be in a bad situation. :nervous: Total out of pocket cost for me for hip replacement was $300.00 out of a $32K+ bill. I could have me another Screamin' Eagle for the cost of this hip. Maybe I should consider it my new SE. :nixweiss: ;D

I can appreciate your situation. Although mine is a bit different, maybe I could be a bit of help. I'm 6' 2" and weigh close to 300 lbs. I suffered an injury at work 1 1/2 years ago that left me with 4 herniated discs and nerve damage in both the right leg and right arm. My right leg is so bad that I can hardly walk 1/2 block before the leg begins to fail. I just turned 49 a few weeks ago and finally bought my dream bike a few months ago - an '07 FXSTSSE. I've read a few comments about how lousy the stock seat is on this bike, but I personally have to disagree. When I first rode the bike, I had a lot of pain in the right leg and wondered if I would ever be able to ride my dream bike after waiting nearly a lifetime to get it. I found that if I scoot forward on the seat with my hips until my crotch just barely reaches the tank, I can ride for days with no pain!! It's as if I found my "sweet spot". The rise in the seat is just enough to support my lower back as well in this position. This bike does come with forward controls, but the could be just a bit more forward for even more comfort (there is an existing thread on this topic as well), something I plan on checking into further in the near future. My point here is - maybe your seat has a "sweet spot" as well and you won't hafta give up your dream bike either. Try some different, or even "unusual" postures and see if it doesn't make a difference. It's sure cheaper than a custom seat or a new bike!! Let me know how ya make out, Fella!!

Your bike has a totally different seat pan so there is no comparison, on a road king these is no sweet spot. If you were 5'8" and weighed 165 lbs you might get buy on one.

Just wait till you get some more miles on your seat, you will be wimpering. Once that crap foam that HD uses starts to break down it will not matter where you sit.

Best of luck
