Kuryakyn Mark IV Highway...revisited....
« on: July 04, 2007, 06:59:40 AM »

Hi all. Happy 4th of July to you and yours. Please everyone, ride safe.

I had an interesting conversation via Email with Kuryakyn support staff. I had purchased my Mark IV directly from Kuryakyn (That sure is hard to type !!) over 6 months ago. I like them very much and get many comments how cool the Hwy Pegs set up are done.

I received them quickly, got the right part numbers and installed overnight with some other goodies; always keeping OCD as the main theme for the all nighters.

When checking the contents, I noticed two very similar clevis ( I think that is the right name ) (the PEG HOLDING adjustable chrome piece) but for some reason, one didn't seem to fit. On my right side HWY peg, the clevis bared nothing but chrome; smooth finish very clean looking with the HD Flames peg. The opposite clevis was just that: opposite with the bolt hole facing forward. Not very clean and for some reason it looks really bad having one side smooth finish forward and the other bolt hole forward.

I email the support staff, get this, 6 months after taking delivery. I asked simply: " is that right? is this order correctly filled"?  A day later the answer came: " yes correct order and the configuration is known to the management" or something like that.

I reply: " Is there a remedy for this goofy setup with only one hole going forward"? Answer: " Part number XXXXXXX ( I have it if you want it ) will adjust and remedy this problem I have.

I reply" Why the hell does this high end company like Kuryakyn sell the setup Mark IV with the 'wrong' part? And have a separate purchase and sku for the fix? What the hell is going on over there?

I was curious if anybody else had this same problem? Please let me know. They asked for my address and the company is shipping me a "correct" clevis delivery by next week. GREAT!!!

 :soapbox:

Why is this so strange to me ?? Pictures to follow....

Kona, (I am letting you know)

I need more info on this!    I also just spent more than 6 months living with this issue as my highway pegs have the exact same ends on them as yours. I just thought I was being a bit anal & would have to learn to live with this. But now you have given me hope & maybe Kuryakan will give me a new left side thingy, mount, adaptor, clevis or what ever it is also. I will post pics later. I also purchased direct from Kuryakyn (and paid the preimum price). Come to think of it, I think I paid about 3 months before they were released (new product) as they were delayed for months, I probably paid for them about a year ago.

But anyway what ever info you can give me I will use in my fight for justice!

Cheers

I'm looking at the photos....
Can't you pull the footpeg off and roll the left side mount over 180 degrees and install the footpeg back on?

If not, then my guess is Kuryakyn is trying to save money by producing the same part for both sides.

I like the way you think, but unfortunately this would make the peg fold down instead of up  which of course is not what we want!

Yes! I would guess kuryakyn is or was trying to save money & getting away with it too in most cases. Maybe they have only made the correct part recently due to too many complaints!

You are not being anal guys!! I tried to look into the source of deviation from high standards to what I call " Lack of quality control and understanding their marketplace". I mentioned above that the manufacturer is going to ship me the right part for my application:

I received the email notification today that it has indeed shipped. I can't get a comment from the sales associate who; while sitting on mega stock and products failed to understand normal thinking, has declined to comment further only that issue.

The correct part, while made surley will be an issue to some, will ship as promised. I will let you all know what the outcome is.

Aussie,

The wrong one? I think the wrong one is the one out of symmetry. In other words, the symmetrical balance should be a choice by the customer, not the mfg. If I want bolts forward, I would order this although not likely. When I want the smooth finish forward, on both sides of my bike, I'll buy it and pay for it.

The misleading bullchit by showing pictures of one side only or two items with both bolt holes forward ( 2 part numbers to cover the fact that it is not symmetrical ) is just too much for me to believe. I think these high end mfg's are fully aware of the cheap design flaw, still market the items with misleading pictures (for lack of a better word) and sell with the anticipation of getting no negative response from the consumer, dealer or distributor due to the "Kuryakyn" brand name. That's a load of crap.

In a more perfect world; one which we strive to accomplish through aftermarket products or demanding from (for example) Harley Davidson; this clevis problem, which is part of over 6 pages of catalog parts and accessories, would be fixed in a minute by a single response. To tell me they have a separate sku # in a retail package for sale tells me a lot of what I don't want in a company I do business with. That's true even though they have cool stuff that is appealing. I think I am done with Kuryakyn until I get a response from the Mfg.

I also noticed that you have the same problem with BOTH foot peg clevis AND highway peg clevis. Your choice of footpeg and highway are not the same as mine yet we share the same dilemma. This can only add to my soapbox case  :soapbox: that they should market the "matching" parts instead of getting additional money from the consumer "after" the aftermarket purchase. :zwtf:

Now that I got that off my chest, I will tell you they did ship my "replacement" clevis (part # 627879 = MIRROR SPITFIRE CLEVIS) and I received it today. I will install their "fix kit" and let you know what side the Manufacturer decided to replace. I hope it is the smooth side forward. Either way, stay tuned: I will post pix ASAP.

I bought mine used, but noticed the same thing, one bolt is forward and one is back, but I also noticed something stranger, both clevises will bolt up to one arm with no issues, but when I tried to install the other side neither clevis would seat down to the serrations. the diameter of the little guide tit on the end of the arm was slightly larger at the base not allowing the clevis to seat with the serrations, and thus not locking in the position you have it angled at. I had to file down the chrome finish on the O.D. of the guide tit on the arm until it allowed the clevis to sit flush and all was good again. since they were used arms I had no heartburn about doing this, but had they been new, the Kuryf*ckn design team would have been hearing from me.

Now In retrospect, I'm wondering if this difference in the guide tit was a design intent, so that each side would fit its own clevis that would only work on the mating arm and keep the bolts facing back.  :nixweiss:
anybody else experience this ????
