Driving my bike in Minnesota on hot days I had a pinging noise.  Ever since I moved to Virginia and use gas without ethanol the noise is gone.  Anyone else had teh same things happening?

Muddypaws,

You didn't mention what bike, engine, etc., so any response will have to be generic in nature.  If you are talking about this recent spring season, when the upper midwest had some much higher than normal temps for a few weeks, yes I had a fairly severe pinging issue also (located just southeast of Chicago).  At the time, the refineries had not gotten their summer fuel blends into the distribution system.  Winter grades are more volatile, for easier starting in the cold.  That higher volatility can cause this problem when the weather suddenly gets hot, especially with an air cooled engine.

My issue went away without changing anything.  I ran some injector cleaner in a couple tanks of gas, just in case the injectors were a little gunked up, but the biggest change was getting fresh summer grade fuel.  BTW - ethanol has a much higher octane rating than gasoline, so that wouldn't be the cause of your ping.  Might cause other driveability issues, but not the ping.
