They did this for all us absent minded old farts who might forget we left the bike in gear when we shut if off, then come back out and hit the starter to let her warm up while we put on our jacket/helmet/gloves.  Anybody here admit to hitting the starter button without pulling the clutch in first, or making sure the bike was in neutral?

The kickstand makes a nice pivot point in a left hand turn...

The truth is, this technology has been on HD's competition for YEARS...they are just doing what new riders/buyers expect to see on a bike.  I personally don't see it as something to get my panties in a wad over....if it ever fails, it's easy to jumper around it.
Hey, Hey...
I resemble that...... Not that I'm an old fart  ;D
Had parked the scoot on an incline, so naturally left it in gear....
Oh well, at least I was sitting on hit when I hit the starter..... mild whiplash..... thats all.  :D

Don't forget, this is only on the International and Police models, not ones that we'll be sitting on. At least not this year.

Well, they took care of that with the '07. It won't crank unless its in Neutral or the clutch lever is in.

I think the side stand thing is funky, but maybe the overseas market is different and it is a standard over there. I'm OK with it, but the extra wire is ugly.  ;D

I expect you'd get a different perspective from someone who forgot to put the kickstand up before driving away. Bike will pivot nicely on an extended kickstand sending the rider on a trip of the hurting kind. As far as the starter interlock for not engaging the starter while the bike is in gear, I LIKE that idea. I once punched the start button when the bike was in gear and it 'bout pulled my arms out of my shoulders and sent me through a store window. Sorry Hoist, I gotta disagree with you on this one. Keep 'er tween the ditches! 8)

Electronically interlocked Jiffy Stand! ::) You gotta be kidding. The bikes should be made for people that know what the hell they're doing! That's the biggest bunch of BS I've ever heard! Man, am I glad I got the last year of real HD Motorcycles!!! This is ridiculous!!! Just what we need, more idiots on the road that don't have a clue. If you can't put up your kickstand, don't ride!!! What a bunch of crap!!! :soapbox: Actually, I ain't done! ;D Maybe they figure if you can't start your bike because you don't know how to work the kickstand, they'll save w....ty $$$. They should supply matching trailers with them so people never have to figure out the kickstands, and never ride them! Geez, just trailer it and park it in front of your nearest Broken Spoke Saloon. Instant Biker!!! ::) ::) ::) ;) Hoist! 8)

The starter interlock is a useful feature that my Japanese bikes had back in the 80's.  I've had this habit for many years of starting the bike and letting it warm up while putting on my helmet and gloves, all while standing next to the bike.  Obviously, you don't want to do that if someone has "accidentally" nudged the shifter into gear.  The first thing I had to learn when starting my Harley's without the interlock was to make sure the neutral light was on before hitting the starter button.

As for the jiffy stand interlock, H-D didn't add that out of the goodness of their heart (what heart, you say?).  Various countries require this as part of their safety certification.  As long as they only come up with innocuous stuff like this, and stay away from the idiotic stuff like mandatory air bags/seat belts/ etc., I can live with it.

I've just forced myself to get into the habit of always pulling the clutch in to start, even if the neutral light is on.  The kickstand interlock has been on Ducati's for a while now, so it may indeed be a Euro deal.  It's really not a bad feature to have, if the wires can be hidden well enough.  A kickstand down in a sharp left turn can ruin your day bigtime, and they don't always kick up out of the way when making contact with the pavement.  I did this on a bicycle once, and it hurt like hell...

I'd rather them put a cool electrically actuated center stand on it like the beemers have.

Miker
Miker,

Well, they probably could go out and buy a Beemer, tear it down, and try to reverse engineer the stand.  They seem to be good at doing that with aftermarket stuff.  However, they would first offer it as a dealer installed accessory and probably charge about $895 plus labor for it.  Only after several more years would they consider installing it at the factory, and of course the MSRP would increase at least $1k.  To save on production costs, a few design shortcuts would be taken that eliminates certain safeguards, allowing some stands to collapse with no warning.  H-D would disavow responsibility, claiming the customers had modified the bike and then parked in an unapproved location during a full moon.

I've personally come to the conclusion that if you want the latest and best technology, H-D is not a good choice.  If you like old technology, relatively new technology poorly implemented, and plenty of wrenching on your bike, H-D is the place to be.  And while that may sound like I'm being my usual smart-azz self, there are plenty of folks who were drawn to H-D exactly for the old style, old tech, supposedly simpler design.  That is part of why I made the switch from Honda to Harley back in the '90's myself.

Why do we need devices to protect us from our own stupidity or negligence? I pull the clutch in to start a bike and step on the clutch to start a car. Period! I lift the kickstand before I pull away, and usually do it before I even start the bike. If I don't do these things, I pay the consequences! I'm sorry, if I'm not together enough to figure out how to properly operate my motorcycle, I shouldn't be on it. These idiots that don't have a clue, jeopardize my life on the road and they just don't belong there at all! That's why I won't ride in organized large group rides. Way too many amateurs out there these days. Let's make it even easier for them. Where's the automatic trans on the '08"s?! ::)

Why do you have to press on the brake to shift a car into gear?

Because some fool screwed up and sued the manufacturer for a gazillion dollars... and won.

If the company is smart, they implement roadblocks to prevent stupid people from doing stupid things because we all know that we are no longer accountable for our own stupid behavior, as long as we can find an attorney that wants to take the case and make some money from the manufacturer.

You might as well settle down Howie, because its only going to get worse.  ;D

Look at it this way, the poor lowly Jiffy stand is getting some respect from CVO Harley.  Never has been talked about before that I'm aware of.  Hoist is right in the nonsense but Chief is also correct in that it will only get worse.  Don't you know, we have to be protected from ourselves?   :-\

Those so called amateurs are the product of 40 years of broken homes and the current Education system that produces these Amateurs - It's never my fault It's always someone else or George Bush's Fault. I'm sure you heard that line before it is being taught daily in all school systems.

Enjoy your future.

BS! We're taliking about motorcycles here! Not cars. We've decided as a society that everyone pretty much needs a car to get around these days. So we figured out a way to let any moron get one. Whether they deserve to be on the road or not! And we build safety controls in so that moron doesn't kill himself or others, as you said. Motorcycles are different. They also require a separate licence and have their own requirements to be able to ride them. Why would we soften requirements for competent riding, by making the bikes idiot proof! Idiots shouldn't be on them! Why not let every moron get behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer too! You can sugar coat this any way you want. But you'll never get me to agree that motorcycles should be idiot-proof so your everyday moron can ride one too! :soapbox:

Howie, Howie, Howie - you've got to get a grip m-man.  You start spouting stuff like "accountability" and you'll have every ambulance chaser and do-gooder member of congress trying to censor you and lock your azz away somewhere.

BTW - have you ever seen a Ridley?  Centrifugal clutch like a go cart, CVT trans, styled to look like a small Harley.

What makes you think we don't already do that?  Look up George Ryan from Illinois, currently appealing his conviction for selling commercial licenses while Secretary of State (got to jack up the ol' campaign fund).  And with the huge demand for drivers these days, it's not like the 50's and 60's when truckers were the very best drivers on the highways.  Now you have folks who can't even read or speak English somehow getting commercial licenses (wonder if we have bilingual tests for that also?).

Face it, everything is being "dumbed down" to suit our undereducated, no-accountability, overindulged society.  Good thing you bought that '07, Howie, 'cause within a few more years if you can buy a motorcycle at all it will probably be equipped with air bags, seat belts, and outriggers, to go along with the automatic trans and speed governor.
