I'd rather them put a cool electrically actuated center stand on it like the beemers have.

Miker,
Well, they probably could go out and buy a Beemer, tear it down, and try to reverse engineer the stand. They seem to be good at doing that with aftermarket stuff. However, they would first offer it as a dealer installed accessory and probably charge about $895 plus labor for it. Only after several more years would they consider installing it at the factory, and of course the MSRP would increase at least $1k. To save on production costs, a few design shortcuts would be taken that eliminates certain safeguards, allowing some stands to collapse with no warning. H-D would disavow responsibility, claiming the customers had modified the bike and then parked in an unapproved location during a full moon.
I've personally come to the conclusion that if you want the latest and best technology, H-D is not a good choice. If you like old technology, relatively new technology poorly implemented, and plenty of wrenching on your bike, H-D is the place to be. And while that may sound like I'm being my usual smart-azz self, there are plenty of folks who were drawn to H-D exactly for the old style, old tech, supposedly simpler design. That is part of why I made the switch from Honda to Harley back in the '90's myself.
