Oil, Oil Everywhere!
« on: July 25, 2007, 03:39:22 PM »

Don't know how many of you have experienced this, but on a weekend trip this past weekend, I was riding along and smelled something burning.  I stopped and was checking my bike to see what was making the smell.  Low and behold, my oil filler was sitting about a 1/4" up and oil was spewing everywhere :confused5:  I've had the new style oil filler cap with the temp and oil level in the bike since I picked it up, (16K Miles), and this is the first time this has happened.  Someone told me that they had heard this has happened before with this cap.  Anyway, the dealer gave me a new one since it was still seaping even  after I pushed it down.  I have made a mental note to add this to my pre-ride checklist; check the oil filler cap!  Hopefully this might prevent someone else from going through the same thing.  Spent a few hours cleaning it up and now looks new again :2vrolijk_21:

I just read an editorial in the lastest American Iron rag about the very same thing.  The editor was out riding his Ultra and the same thing happen.  Spewed oil all over the side of his bike and rear tire (very dangerous).  He didn't state what had caused it, as when he wrote the article he was having it checked.  Thank goodness the 07's and newer bikes have the screw-in filler cap.
Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,

Wish there was a way to retrofit mine to a screw cap :nixweiss:

I had a similar problem with a '99 Dyna.  The dipstick didn't come out completely, just enough to blow some oil back on the rear of the bike.  After that little mess, I have always made sure to wipe as much oil off the seal on the dipstick and off the sealing surface in the filler neck as possible.  Never had another issue with the Dyna, and none so far with the SEEG following this same routine.  May or may not have anything to do with it, but I figure it can't hurt.

This typically happens if you overfill your oil.  First time you get on it at all the dipstick blows.  Keep your oil level halfway between the 2 lines, no higher and this problem goes away.

So the MOCO did something right by "idiot proofing" the oil spout cap, so "morons" who put oil in the pan above the halfway point on the dipstick won't have their oil caps blown off the first time they romp on it?   Sorta like the 08 HDI model Jiffy Stand interlock?  ;) ::)

I installed the oil level/temp unit on the 06 and to get it off you have to turn it slightly counter clockwise and then pull it up.  On the 05 I just have the temp read out unit...no level indicator.  I will add the look see of it to my list but never heard this as a problem before.
Thanks

I had one of those in a 03 RK. This is correct..you have to turn CC a bit to remove, but just as important, you must turn CC to install and then clockwise to lock. I would always turn it CC till it was slightly not level or straight and then clockwise to straighten it and it locks. No problem with leaks then.

Those are Carhartts and second hand resoled HD boots, Howie.  If I wear anything else they're Liberties and Justin or Ariat work boots......well, I've been known to wear jeans and sneakers occasionally..........when it's time to dress up.   ;) ::)

Occasionally we still hear of a bike that has a real issue with pushing the oil cap up a bit.  No matter how short the oil is run.  Though it likely speaks to issues elsewhere Feuling does have a "kit" that's supposed to help this.

It's really just the oil filler  housing with an extra fitting tapped in its backside.  Fitting is in the fill spout part of the housing below the rubber seal on the dipstick.  A line attaches to it and just gives a pressure vent to atmosphere.

No real reason one couldn't take the housing offing and drill and tap it yourself (chrome questions aside).  But, if anyone actually has a recurring issue here, the Feuling this is at least an option.
