Rear Tire
« on: January 28, 2005, 02:11:13 PM »

Took the bike down to the shop today to get a new rear tire installed.  Currently the bike has about 5600 miles.
Seems like I read somewhere that in 2004 HD went to a longer life tire compound. I usually get 6000 - 8000 miles on a rear tire.
I don't see where the harder compound improved tread life at all.
All in all it's no big deal, the new tire was just a bit over $100, I was just curious how many miles others here are getiing out of the rear tires on the SEEGs.

Wow, at 5600 I'd be feel a bit short changed.  Even before the new "longer tread life" tires I usually got 8000 plus out of back tires.  Got 10,000 out of the last one on the Road King before the bike sold.

Granted those are better because the majority of my miles are highway on the summer trips or weekend outings and I don't just run around town that much on the bike.  But it's still a big difference.   You haven't been... um... well; making that back tire go round and round while the rest of the bike was sitting still any have you ? Burn outs?  I have 9K on mine and still good tread left.

Twolane;  Back in my younger days I would have to 'fess up to " cleaning the dirt off of the back tire" once in a while, but no, this was just "normal" riding.  [smiley=laugh.gif]

I was able to get this tire for around $100 because of the tire sale that my dealership was having. Seems like they have a lot of sales this time of year to generate buisness. My old tire still had 2/32nds left, and the shop book says it's good down to 1/32nd, but I just think that tires are too inexpensive to not replace when they get down that far.

JCZ; I probably could have gone to 6000 w/o a problem, but like you said, it's just not worth the gamble.

If you were at 2/32 you were certainly due.  I just can't believe you got there in only 5,600 miles.  I've got 7,000 on mine and will measure depth this weekend and post, but these tires are definitely wearing better than both rear tires I had on my '02 Electra Glide Classic.  7,500 miles and time for tires, just like clockwork.  The SEEG rear tire I should get 9,500 - 10,000 out of, based on eyeballing where it's at right now.

Mobe, 5600 is a bit hard to believe. I've got mine in for the 10,000 and had the same (2/32) measurement and being no slouch on speed or corners, I thought the same about my ride. Quick math, 1000 pounds traveling 85 mph on a surface, at best, the size of your two palms... I'm looking for some tread. I hate to harp on it but the easy thoughts may go for excessive starts and stops, one could imagine you rarely take on and off ramps at posted speed... a more savy eye may be looking at tire pressure. Especially with frequent temperature fluctuations, that guage lives on my bike and comes out to nearly every party.

Dam I had to put a little over 11,000 before I could replace the dunlop with a metzler.

Excellent insights all. But I check my tire pressure religiously, don't do smokey burnouts and don't slide my rear tire by using too much rear brake, (my rear brake pads are fine). I have to guess that  1) I'm a bit to agressive with the cornering, although I've only ground off 1/32nd or so of my side stand and so far everything is intact on the right side. And 2)  I'm thinking that the road surfaces around here may be extra abrasive as they have done a lot of chip and seal to the south of where I live, (in fact I think that they have done chip and seal on EVERYTHING to the south of me).
For those unfamiliar with the process, this is where they spray thick tar oil all over the road then just dump coarse chipped rock on top of it and let the traffic push the rock into the oil. You DO NOT want to ride on this stuff for a week or so afterwards unless you love dust and rock chips! After the dust clears, (pun intended), the surface is very coarse and abrasive. I'm thinking that this probably contributed to my tire wear, as I ride to the south of my home most of the time. [smiley=smilie_staub.gif]

That sounds like a candidate! You can keep the road chips, I'll keep dodging the road apples! [smiley=7.gif]

I have over 7,000 miles with hardly any wear at all. My advice? The more miles you put in on the dyno, the lomger your tread life...scenery isn't so good though!

On the 98 Ultra I would get 8 to 9 thousand. On the 2000 Classic is was 7 to 8 thousand.
On the 03 Classic it is 8 to 9 thousand. On the 03 the second and third tire I ran was the new high mileage tire. Rear tire two and three didn't show anymore mileage than the standard tire. Not sure what up with that but the new style is $20.00 cheaper so I'm in.

Have always gotten more than 20k out of the fronts.

The SEEG tires are wearing well [smiley=nervous.gif], but due to the rain and ice and cold I only have 275 miles on it. [smiley=laugh.gif]
