So I go to replace my rear tire today.
« on: July 27, 2007, 03:20:55 PM »

As the wrench is removing the rear wheel, he calls me over to look at something in my belt.

I picked up a rock that worked its way all the way through the belt. I made some calls, and it looks like I'm facing about $600.00 to change it out. That seems high, but that's what I was quoted by one dealer and one indy.

The bad news is I'll probably be out $600.00.
The good news is that I found it before I hit the road later this summer.

So I look at the Factory Service Manual

And if I understand their instructions correctly, the belt does NOT need to be replaced because the puncture is NOT on the edge.
Does anyone else interpret this another way?

I shows the stone coming through the belt just like mine, and it says it's okay.
What's your gut feeling?

Personally, I'd replace it as it seems to have damaged at least 30% of the belts width.

Better safe than sorry on the side of the road later.  :nixweiss:

Don't hesitate...replace!!!

right on   :2vrolijk_21:

example:   it's a holiday weekend and your out for a weekend putt and pooof the belt snaps 300 miles from home
and all motorcycle dealers are closed for the holiday weekend, now are you thinking hotel or tow truck  :nixweiss:
get the drift   :nixweiss:    that $600 could turn into a $$grand$$ or more real quick, plus ruining your whole weekend

Preventive Maintenance is the Key........IMHO

What about the sprockets???  If the $600 includes new sprockets, new belt, and labor, not a bad price at all.  MSRP on a belt alone is $207, not sure about the stock rear sprocket but the fancier rear sprockets go for $349, no idea about the trans sprocket.

Definitely check the sprockets out carefully.  You would hate to have the new belt installed only to have it chewed up by a damaged sprocket.

I have two friends who both found rocks in the center of their belts just as you have.  Both chose to "wait and see" and both snapped their belts - neither while in their driveway either....!! :-\

Not to sound like a jerk, but did the belts snap at the hole? I ask, because I heard from someone who said their belt snapped away from the hole.

I'm not as blotto as I thought I was.  Otherwise it would never have occurred to me to delete what I just wrote in response to that.  Even thinking it should keep me on probation for another year.... ???

I had a belt snap in Chattanooga two years ago on my '01 Ultra at the National HOG Rally.  A tow truck and $500.00. The only good thing was I just came off I-75 running 80.  Glad it didn't snap then.  Those belts can get wrapped up in your frame and/or your sprokets and you will have a bad day. Replace it now and save yourself some grief.
