TotalMortorcyle.com in a 2005 Interview with Harley Davidson Motorcycles, Ric De Guzman, Ric said of the future:
"TMW: What do you foresee Harley Davidson focusing on more in the future?
Ric: Harley Davidson will still continue to focus on our Heritage and Tradition, but this doesn't mean we will be stagnant in our motorcycle designs. Our traditional buyers are white males in their mid-40's with above average incomes. We are focusing on designing more new models that will appeal to urban and younger riders so that we can start growing our clientele. There is a new market trend that Harley Davidson will also focus more on, and that is the growth in female buyers. Female riders love our Sportster models and are buying up about 35% of all our Sportster sales. By designing more of our current and future models with lower seat heights we will be able to better meet the needs of short legged riders, and smaller female riders. Our 2005 Sportster 883L features a seat height of just 26 inches, making the 883L the lowest Sportster ever.
Harley Davidson is also looking at growth outside of the USA (North America) and into non-traditional markets.
TMW: What things might we expect to see from Harley Davidson in the future?
Ric: The future will be very exciting for Harley Davidson and its riders. Our new Harley Davidson V-Rod (VRSC) liquid cooled V-Twin engine is a big technological development for us. This engine is too good to be available to only one model and we plan to use this great engine, thus sharing V-Rod technology in many more of our upcoming models. Harley Davidson cruiser owners have been telling us they want more power. We are listening and therefore will be refining our cruiser engine to feature more horsepower and improvements so that we can give the customers what they want.
Our Sportster lineup will also be expanded soon to offer even more to each rider. Speaking about the Sportster lineup, we are looking into the possible release of factory-customized Screaming Eagle motorcycles for the new 883 releases. As Harley Davidson likes to keep everything as secret as possible I cannot "officially" say yes to this one, but I would look out for new Sportster R models featuring the V-Rod engine in the near future!
Here is a great tip for seeing what is to come in the future from Harley Davidson. Take a look at the Screamin' Eagle models for 2005. They were actually produced to gauge the interest of you, the rider. You will notice new features and changes on these Screamin' Eagle models that have not come out yet on our mainstream models. The current V-Rod engine is 1130cc, while the 2005 Harley Davidson Screamin' Eagle V-Rod engine is 1250cc
