I just posted this in another section, but it may fit better here. I have the exact opposite problem. I took filter off and very little oil ran out. Turned filter up and still none ran out, a little concerned about that. Anyone else experience this?

Very little oil came out of the oil filter when you removed it???   Never had that happen on car or bike.  How many miles on the filter?  Sounds like it's plugged up.

engine runs ok but was surprised filter was practically empty. I did let it drain a long time from drain plug and waondered if vacuum could have emptied it, but didn't think so. 3 1/2 quarts filled it back up.

Assume you are changing oil from a warm engine (always should do that)....that filter should about "spew" oil when you crack it free from the gasket.  I don't like the sound of that.  I'd be tempted to unscrew the new filter after you ride to see if it dumps oil and is full.  If not, I would at least mention to the dealer.

if he drained it from the pan first, and then the filter couldn't it cause that issue. wouldn't it drain the filter and the pan, but leave most of it in the engine and lines?

I always drain the pan first and I've never seen a filter on a warm motor NOT ooze oil as soon as you crack the filter loose.  Also, when the old filter is removed, it a lot of oil in it.  Maybe not full to the brim cause a bit comes out while you're unscrewing it from the motor.  I have a homemade trough that I put under the filter and it fills to overflowing when I am unscrewing the filter.

Never in my experience, and I always drain the oil pan first and the filter last.  Even if you don't pull the dipstick to vent the oil tank, there is a full time vent line so you won't draw a vacuum.  And even if you could pull a vacuum, all you would get is the little bit of oil in the passage between the oil pump and the tank.  Only one time did I ever get a little less than a full gusher when I cracked the filter loose, and that was when I pulled the filter on a cold engine that had been sitting for a fairly long period of time.  It wasn't empty, however, just 1/2 to 2/3 full instead of full.

I would be very leery of this situation, and not just mention it in passing to the dealer but would insist they check it out thoroughly.  Something in the oil cooler adaptor or the oil passages could be wrong from the factory, bypassing the filter.

Well I can't explain it but loosened the new filter and oil went everywhere. I have been riding over 40 years and have always done my own maintenance so this isn't the first time I have changed oil but it is the first time this has happened. Thanks for all the advise I will talk to dealer but it seems fine now and like I said motor is running fine I still don't have a clue

I'm not at all sure this would account for everything you described.  The only thought that comes to mind and seems at all consistent with what you've reported was you had a filter with a bad bypass valve.

I agree, since the problem didn't repeat with the second filter it's unlikely to be a problem with the case machining or oil cooler adapter, etc.   If the original filter is still available, and the MoCo is the least bit interested, they could test it to be sure.  I'm very doubtful that they would be interested, but I think if it were me I'd document the problem with them and keep the original filter as evidence just in case.
