1000 mile service
« on: August 28, 2007, 04:18:30 PM »

Has anyone had this happen to them? I took my 07 CUSE in to Whit's HD for the 1000 mile service. Yes I do most of the service myself but it is under 2 year warranty and I just didn't have the time. So I drop it off Monday and ask the service writer, who looks all of 19 years old to do the service and just check that the ACR's are working. I had what appeared to be some starting issue when it's hot. Not bad but just wanted to verify that they are working. Now I have Vance & Hines true duals and the SERT done by them and I have not had any heat issues, it runs around 230 to 240 on even the
hottested days. I'm familiar with ACR's as I have them on my 05 Big Dog, but they work off the ignition switch not the ECM.
Well today just after noon I get a call from the mechanic assigned to work on my bike. He tells me he did not experience any hard starting issues hot or cold. I said no problem, I was not too concerned as it is still new and this was only a couple of times when it was hot. He then told me that Harley's don't come with ACR's so he could not verify their function, also if I was concerned about hard starting I could upgrade to Harley's 1.4Kw starter, it would be extra since Harley's don't come standard with these. I waited a few seconds for the punch line and when I realized he wasn't kidding I told him to check the 07 FLHTCUSE2 service manual supplement section 8.16 for Automatic Compression Releases or ACR's, also check section 5.1 for the 1.4Kw starter that is standard for this model. Do you think he found the oil drain and put oil back? LOL You have to laugh, but do you think I will return for anything? I will find another dealer for warranty work even if I have to go out of state. Just wanted to let everyone know the high caliber of techs at Whit's HD, Manassas Virginia.

I hope you bring this to the attention of the Service Manager and Owner along w/your feelings about never bringing your bike to have them service it. :sauer005: It's a shame you had to receive such poor service, and they (SM/Owner) should be made aware of this. A letter to the MoCo's customer service department would also be a good idea.

I plan to speak to the GM on Wednesday when I pick it up, it sure doesn't instill any confidence in the service department. But you have to admit it is kinda funny, I'm surprised they didn't try to sell me the 110 ci up grade with premium oil cooler!

Good. :2vrolijk_21: You may want to bring him out to go over your bike and check to make sure that everything is the way you dropped it off, and the service(??) was performed as it should have been. If you do find anything wrong I would in no way let that same tech fix the problem, and I'd probably demand that I went back into the shop as they were corrected w/another tech. You definitely have grounds for lack of confidence.

I'd even make sure they had sense enough to at least put Syn3 back in the bike!!

I had a similar experience allowing the dealer to do my 5K because I was short on time...never again!!  I just keep my receipts and do it all myself.  They've only touched my bike twice since, and both have been small warranty issues.  They have now learned that if I bring the bike in, I've pretty much got the problem/issue figured out and just need them to change the part or correct the issue.

I bought my 2001 (in 2001) Ultra from Whitts and at that time there service was Good they preformed my 95 inch upgrade (before Del) flawless I had no trouble with the motor. The week after I came back for my 1000 mile service My Salesman Had been let go and there was also a new service manger.

The next time I returned to have a tire installed and service the service manger was new. After that I never went back, The Owner Changes personal every week I wouldn't even talk to them much less let anyone there work on my bike.

Whitts doesn’t even allow (Throw OUT) the HOG chapter to meet at his dealership they meet at a fire house in Manassas that should speak Volumes about Mr. Whitt.

In the Washington DC area it doesn't matter how you treat people because there is a NEW one coming in every day that is only reason this dealer has remained in Business.

I recommend you take your business else where.

(GO WEST)

I took my 08 SEUC back to the HD dealer where I bought the bike for the 1K last week because the 1K service was part of the deal.  I always do all of my own service, but since the 1K was not going to cost me any more, I took it back to the dealer.
The next day I notice a few drops of oil under the bike.  After looking it over I figured out that the oil was dripping out of the oil cooler >>> when the tech removed the oil filter he let oil run everywhere.  So I had to clean up their mess :sauer005:.  I wish I would have just done the service myself.

Just a quick update, I couldn't find the GM but spoke to SM he assured me that the tech that worked on my bike will never be allowed to touch mine again, he also put a note in the computer that when my bike is in that only one tech was to work on it, their oldest and most experienced. I met the tech and he seems like a good guy. The SM said I should only talk to him and he would take care of me. Sounds like what you want to hear right? Well that was Wednesday, I ride the bike home and park it. Thursday morning I get ready to take the bike out to pick up my mail, 14 mile trip to the Post Office, so just before I leave I do a cold check of the oil. I also have the new digital temp/level dipstick. When I push the button on the dipstick I get High Oil message, and when I pull the stick it shows oil past the Hot level mark. I call the SM and tell him I think the tech over filled the bike and I'm coming in now! Long story short, we used a suction pump and pulled a quart of oil out and it went to normal level for hot, got it home and checked after it cooled and all is normal. I'm cured, I will make time and do all maintenance. I will find another for warranty work if needed. Stay away from Whit's!

It is exactly this story and dozens of others that I continue to hear that made me go out and purchase a Handy Lift, Service Manual and upgrade the tool box over at Sears.  I look at it this way: How much stupider can I be than most of these so-called "techs" at the Harley store?  At least I'll know who screwed it up!

Seriously, most of us can do the basic service and general maintenance on these bikes.  With a half way decent set of tools, most anyone can learn to do it.  Besides, it's good therapy...

Has anyone had this happen to them?

Dawgtired,

Yeah, happened to me back in '88. No oil pressure on my brand new softail! Took it in twice, they told me not to worry. I pulled the oil pump and found sand caked up inside the pump. Must not have cleaned it very well at the factory but the dealer was and idiot. Had to build my own "hobby" shop and haven't had any of my bikes back to a stealer since! It was a bit beyond the budget but at least I'll never have to go back!

Sorry (but not surprised) to hear about your experience...

When I had my 1K service done at the dealer, I was surprised they didn't line up my valve stems on the front and rear wheels.    :nixweiss:   ::)
