Here we go again in 08
« on: August 31, 2007, 11:12:32 AM »

Got an email from a buddie. He just picked up his 08 SE Ultra last week. While riding yesterday, he came to a stop with smoke pouring off the bike. The oil temp was 312 with oil coming out the air filter. He's taking it back to the shop this morning.  >:(

Isn't it just great to know that the MoCo are just so on top of their problems and that they are so quick to deal with any issues that arise on their new models !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the second 08 that has reported oil temps over 300 degrees...I don't even recall the 07's having temps that high.  Obviously, they have either done nothing to correct the issues, or have actually made the situation worse. >:(

They could give a rats ass....They got your money.  I don't know why they think it is easier to try and break it off in folks or to fix the same problem again and again.  Heres a clue, how about right the 1st time... :nixweiss:.

How many of these bikes were built either befroe or during the strike and negotiations?...Hmmm what dates?  :confused5:

I'll just fix it right when it schmidts itself.

Yeap, it's not like we don't know this is gonna happen. It's the MoCo we're talking about here. The same MoCo every year. Why does anyone think things are going to change. They make a bike we all love. That's it. After that, you decide how you want to handle things. We all have different expectations and tolerances. But the MoCo moves forward with blinders on! Fight, fix it yourself or switch. They're all your choice. I'm with miker here! I love my bikes and I'll fix 'em right, and work with an understanding dealer to get HD to pay their share under w.....ty when I can. But I want my bike my way regardless. So I do what I have to do! ;)

But the MoCo moves forward with blinders on!

Howie, I completely disagree.  Moving forward with blinders on would suggest they are in some way unaware or at least shielded from the problems they create.  Ignorance or willful ignorance; but ignorance nonetheless.

They are not.

The MoCo knows what's going on.  Both in terms of failure and service issues and in terms of their own willfull lack of responses.  They are completely aware.

They are arrogant, willful, impertinent, shamelessly selfish, greedy, uncaring, rude, self-righteous and sanctimonious.  But they're not ignorant nor uninformed.

Miker,

I haven't seen any evidence that the major issues being experienced were caused or influenced by the labor negotiations.  All I see is the same old MoCo I've been seeing for years, peddling substandard chit because it might take a little more time and effort to do it right.  Because their customer base tolerates the crap instead of refusing to be screwed repeatedly, they obviously believe it isn't necessary to "do the right thing".  I just don't understand why so many folks seem to take pride in letting the MoCo slip it to them repeatedly and then keep going back for more.

Jerry, Don, I agree with you guys, and by blinders on, I more mean bury their heads in the sand. They don't fix it because it would affect the return to their precious shareholders. It's cheaper to fix my bike 10 times for the same thing, then improving hundres of thousands of bikes that don't get ridden. It's all about economics, not quality.

But we let them get away with it because we know they won't change, but they have our loyalty to their bike. Not them, but the bikes. At least that's why I put up with it. It's the only bike I'll ride. I won't go water-cooled either. Hopefully, this is the last dime HD sucks out of me. My SERK3 and '85 FXWG will go to the grave with me. Am I pleased that I've adapted to their repeated screwings? Absolutely not. I do what I do to get MY bike running the way I want it. But I don't think any part of what they do is OK. I will not be on a Gold Wing just to teach them a lesson. So I've grown callous and am used to their screwings, and try to screw them back every chance I get!

Makes one wonder if the MOCO actually does extensive on the road testing and if there's documentation on the heat issue somewhere. Outside of return on their R&D investments, there's a reputation to consider. Maybe it's just plain not caring enough to fix the problem before releasing the product to the market? :nixweiss:

As a shareholder, I'd rather see a lesser return on profit and better design, testing and manufacturing quality control up front. The return for investors will follow. IMHO

skippy,

As far as I can tell, there is only one thing that will grab the attention of Harley management.  When people stop paying inflated prices for substandard products and the profits dry up, the shareholders and board of directors will then insist that management either get their chit together (quickly) or find other jobs.  I don't see them responding to anything less, including call in campaigns, letter writing campaigns, etc.

I'd like to see the top dogs forced to ride one of these under-engineered and quality deficient machines as their only transportation.  No special treatment, no full time chase truck, no factory techs to make constant repairs, etc.  In other words, deal with the same crap we have to, including sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck, then dealing with one of their franchised dealerships for the required repairs.  Now that I would pay good money to see.

So very true. Until they feel the crunch in their wallets they aren't going to even notice the ripple (no matter how big it is) until they have to not be able to afford some of the things that they are presently. Until that time when it hits them in the wallet all actions taken against them is like we are pissing in the wind and telling ourselves it's raining. We are the only ones that are getting wet (feeling the pain). Unfortunately for every one of us that is disgruntled and stops buying their products there are ten more in line to buy them, and they (management) knows this. :( >:(

I wouldn't be surprised if they try to blame the whole thing on your buddy, saying he shouldn't have been riding in such hot weather or at such a slow speed or whatever other manufactured excuse they can come up with.  It seems to be their mode of operation to add insult to injury more often than not in cases like this instead of owning up to the problem.
