HI, My first time here and I can't believe what I'm seeing! I have a 07SERK red and have wanted to do the hard bag thing for some time now and have had nothing but opposition. Your's seem to look great and  I would love to get some more info (help) on how I can get this done. Did you get paint from Harley , does it have flake, and how about the flames? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
                                Thanks, Slugger

Hey slugger, first off, welcome to the best site on the net! For starters, read this thread: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=12109.msg188163#msg188163

Then go back to the beginning of this one. Most of us doing this bought used bags to start with. I sent mine to Paint By Gene in Washington State. Some have used other painters. HD won't supply paint or sell painted Hard Bags. You need a good painter that knows how to duplicate CVO paint jobs. The right painter can match it perfectly. Mine are matched that way. The "Ice" sparkle, the leafed flames (painted, not laid on), pinstriping, and the marbling.

There's so much great info here, you should spend some time reading back thru other threads from over the last year, since the SERK's been out. But be careful, you'll probably find yourself wanting to do much more than just Hard Bags, after reading thru them. This place tends to be very dangerous on your wallet. After reading thru, if you have any other questions, I'l be happy to help you further!

Good luck with your new bike and enjoy this great site! :2vrolijk_21:

Today's Update:

The Feuling parts were in last Fri. The heads, pistons, rings, gaskets, etc, arrived from CR this morning. The Axtell solid barrels came in on Sat. The Torrington cam bearings will ship overnight today, for AM delivery tomorrow. That leaves me 2-1/2 days to get it assembled, started, heat cycled and tested. It appears that if all goes well, that we can get this done before Alex leaves for Europe! I enjoy pushing everything to the last second possible, leaving no room for error! ::)

But it sure keeps you on your toes! :nixweiss:

I'm hopeful we'll have a good solid engine by the time we're done this time around! :2vrolijk_21:

I'll let ya'll know what happens during the course of the next few days. Keep your fingers and toes crossed for me! ;)

Howie, from beginning to end I'm afraid you'll have racked up almost as much in freight charges as many will in parts cost.

Howie, from beginning to end I'm afraid you'll have racked up almost as much in freight charges as many will in parts cost.

Don't remind me Don!

Communication is not up to par in this industry apparently either. I just got a call from Alex asking about the barrels. We were not using the Millennium Barrels, and wanted to go with solids. I was told we were going with Cast Iron Solid Barrels. Apparently, Wes had a conversation with Axtell and was informed that they would not offer CI solids for this motor. Wes had them make Alum. barrels with cyl. liners, similar to stock. They were made special to Wes' specs and was told they were the best barrels to use for this motor. It would have been nice to know this while I was waiting for them, as that was not what I was expecting. Alex said all the parts look great and is embarrassed for the HD parts in comparison. I'll be using everything they sent now. No time to argue over it.

Also found out that the Feuling cyl. studs are not shouldered as I was under the impression they were. Alex knows how to measure and install them. He said he'd install them properly and not to worry. Again, it would have been nice to know this stuff upfront!

So, we're using the Axtell alum barrels, CP forged pistons (thermal coated), CR designed rings, and Feuling/ARP hardware. Alex said Wes did a great job on the heads. ACR holes welded up nicely, new MCR's installed nicely, Thermal coated combustion chamber and valves came out nice too. He's installing the new studs this morning and going as far as he can until he gets the new Torrington cam bearings in the morning. We might even be running tomorrow night or Wed morning.

This appears to be the best I can do as far as the parts we're using. There are no better parts available. I wished they did a better job letting me know what they were furnishing. But I'm comfortable with everything that's going in now. Don't think I missed anything and am confident that this time it'll hold up! Let you know more tomorrow! ;)

What impatient whiney BS you are full of Howie.  How dare you expect a vendor to actually let you know he's altering your promised or expected specs and delivering something other than what you paid for.  These are gods we are lucky enough to spend our money with.  We should in fact genuflect while opening our wallets.  It would be their due (just ask them).

I can’t help but wonder if the reason for the substitution relates to heat issues with the iron cylinders in street applications.

Back in the day when iron cylinders were the norm, an idle boring bar was an odd occurrence. Hard to say for certain, but I think you dodged a bullet.

You're right dj! My engine assembler called and said he didn't have any tools for the big bore CI cylinders. He then called back and said I got alum barrels w/liners. I flipped out because it's not what I was expecting. But everything's all settled down now and we're all on the same page, and agree that we have an excellent batch of components to use for this build now. The Torrington cam bearings just shipped today and will be there in the AM. Hope to be running by tommorrow night!

And as always dj, thanks so much for your help with everything! :2vrolijk_21:

Today's Update:

Well, I just got back from the dealer. Was there since 10AM. All the parts were in. The cam chest is fully reassembled. The pistons, rings, cylinders (and man are those Axtell barrels beautiful!), and heads were mounted when I left. The top end will be completed today. The engine will be fully completed tomorrow, and be ready to fire up again! Cybil will again rise from the ashes! With any luck, it will be ready for pickup tomorrow night, worst case, Thurs sometime. Alex is doing a meticulous job reassembling it. He's impressed with the quality of all the parts I used. He thinks, and I can only hope, that this thing will perform reliably from here on in. Nothing was left to chance this time. All questionable HD junk was removed and replaced with bulletproof, racing quality parts, including 12 point ARP fasteners inside and out. Wes did a great job on the machine work on the heads (welded ACR holes) and the thermal coating looks great. More tomorrow after we fire it up. It looks like I'll be breaking it in on the trip to Neal's this weekend. Should be fully broken in before the trip to MV. All this assumes there were no mistakes on assembly and it fires up without issue. I love watching motors get built and today was a good day spent at the dealer, because it was my motor! I hope tomorrow's even better! ;)
