Let me hijack the babble with
TODAY'S UPDATE:

I've spent the last few days trying to finalize what this build will be. Since I ordered cases, and am building an engine from scratch, I have the opportunity to make some changes to this engine if I'd like. Not as many options as I had hoped out there though. My preference would have been to use a 4.5" crank, for 113" displacement. This would have allowed me to use my new top end, and just replace the pistons with S&S Stroker Pistons. Well, S&S doesn't make stroker pistons for this. I won't use any others in this application, so 113" is out.

Then I have two options in looking at making it 116". S&S makes two Hot Setups for 116". The first is a complete package with the flywheels, cylinders, pistons, heads, and 625 gear drive cam setup. I don't believe the S&S heads will allow the use of the HPI 62mm TB I'm using. I also don't see the need to change the heads I had made for this engine. Second option is the same package without the heads. This comes with a 640 gear drive cam setup. Not really interested in the big lift cams, and higher compression.

It appears that my best, and cheapest option, which will also yield the strongest build, is to leave it 110". It would use all the components I already have on the top end. The performance would remain the same. So would the tune. All I should need is a 4.375" S&S Forged Crank w/Rods, and a gear drive cam setup. Wes can grind the same cams for the gear drive application, which would keep the engine setup exactly as before. I'm leaning in this direction right now. I hope to decide by the end of the day, and get the crank ordered. Just so you're aware, the 4.375" crank is special for them, as they don't mass produce the stock 96"/103"/110" HD crank size. More $$$ of course as a special order. But it'll be a one-off, at this time, and should get some individual attention.

By staying with the 110", I won't have to sell off any of my new top end components either.

At the very least, I will have a set of chain drive CR 595 cams available for sale, designed for the 110 engine by Wes Brown of Cycle-Rama. If I go 116", I'll have other Hi performance 110 parts from my top end available too. I'll post what I have in the Selling Section when I decide which way to go. I like the idea of 116", but I'm leery of upping the stroke a full 1/4" for the longevity/reliability factor! Man, I thought this would be easy! :nixweiss:

Soounds like it will be a strong enough lower end for a nitrous bottle in the ol saddlebag trick?? :P
I had tell more people they were number 1 Saturday whilst out on the oldster getting my workout.   >:(
I wonder why they gotta be like that?

I think it should be that strong miker! But I wouldn't add that little bottle in there, would I? ::)

Decision's been made. I'm keeping it 110". I'm ordering a Race Forged 4-3/8" crank w/rods from S&S. I can't do that until this motor comes apart and we check and weigh the pistons we'll be using. Vern wants to check my CP Forged pistons out, to make sure Alex didn't screw anything else up. I'll reuse them if they're fine. There's only 600 miles on them. We'll be reusing the Axtell barrels too. We'll also need to get the piston weight to S&S before they can build the crank. S&S will special build a Race Quality Forged crank, which will be trued, and balanced exactly for my pistons. We're shooting for ZERO RUNOUT on this build, and don't want it to ever change! The cases are probably going to Scott at Hillside Cycle in Upstate NY to have them modified for the Timkin Bearing. I'll probably use the same cam grind, and have Wes make the same cams for a gear drive application. He's cleaning up the heads too, and I'll get to have the exhaust port thermal coated, which we didn't do last time they were down there. I'll probably have my Fatcats Thermal Coated as well, while everything's apart and in the waiting stage.

So except for a bulletproof stock bottom end now, nothing will be different with this new build. The bike ran great. I was happy with the performance. Going to 116" using a 5/8" leg would take away from the longevity/reliability. I didn't want to fix one problem and cause another one. So I think I'll just perfect the design of the 110, as HD should have before they built these POS engines! Now I'm using a real engine builder, with the best parts available from bottom to top. There's no reason to believe this won't finally take care of this motor once and for all!

Thanks HD for giving me a long term project and ruining every trip I've tried to take this year. Next year will be different! But don't worry. I'll do your engineering and R&D for you. And hey, I did it for free. All you have to do is read about it right here! No secrets with me. And guess what, you won't have to lie and say "it's supposed to make that noise" any longer. Think of what the shareholders would say if people finally stopped complaing about the garbage you make today, instead of bringing the market the best product you could! :D

(I had to do it!) :o
