What's next?
« on: September 05, 2007, 04:19:00 AM »

Reading Howie's thread on his SERK this evening can't help but taking one to a thought something like "that's nice, got her done just the way he wants her."  So done, or at least very close to done, it's a proud effort.

Many of us never seem to get done though.  Howie's thread left me wondering just who is doing what?  What chores and achievements are left ahead in the project pool?

So whether it be solely for curiosity, to help frame it out in your mind or just to quite rightly brag or share the pain; what's next on your ride?  Since I'm asking it seems I should start.  So here goes.

The red bike itself would actually be as done as it's ever going to be, at least no significant projects ahead of it, were it not for a poorly performing and poorly chosen combination of engine upgrades.  One of those cases where the enemy of good was better.  It is what it is though.  An incremental process of rectifying it and getting it right the second time has already begun.

Winter months will see the heavier lifting to really complete the process of unzipping the motor.  Once that is done, however, the bike really does have little in its future other than being enjoyed.  Quite frankly it was running doggedly enough over the summer months that I didn't ride it a great deal.  Throw in some familial health issues foreclosing one trip and other issues stepping in the way of a couple more and I've logged far far fewer miles this year than I probably ever have.  So I'm actually looking forward to tearing it down one last time and getting it corrected for nothing but riding in its future.

Aside from that there are a set of grips and grip heaters here to be installed sometime before cooler weather sets in.  But that's a Saturday afternoon chore sometime.  Nothing else on the horizon.

So; who has big exciting (or small exciting) changes in their bike's future?

Fortunately I think I'm pretty much done w/ my  :cherry: as well. Now it's time to just ride and enjoy it. The zippers cam and gear drive where about as exciting as I got. Eventually my '01 slip ons will have so rusted out as to require replacement but for now they sound great and the performance is where I want to be. The interchangable tour paks and seats are serving us quite well so we're done there and the Progressives have taken most of the jarring bumps away. Still have an issue up front but changing the fork oil will probably get it done. Probably the biggest thing lacking is in the tunes department and we'll probably add a satallite and call that a day. So all in all, it's time to wind down for the season, save a couple of bucks for gas and motels and start thinking about next year.

BTW, what are you unding on your's?

Actually I think I'm leaving my bike just as it is. Not that I plan on selling it anytime soon, but I learned a lesson on my last HD about chasing perfection. Not sure if it exists in the HD world. My stock 103 w/6 speed and 337 gearing is almost perfect. This motor is the quietest HD motor I have ever ridden on, so I've been reluctant to tear into it. Even touring two up in the mountains, there is more than enough power for me. I think the 337 gearing is the most important piece of the puzzle in making the stock 103 feel better. The bike currently has 18K miles with very few of the problems that others have had. I did have the rear cylinder replaced due to bad casings and the regulator recall, but otherwise it's been trouble free. It does use more oil than I'd like, but it's well within the range of "normal" so it will have to get much worse for warranty to cover it. I'm down to 6 months warranty left, but I'm not going to extend it.

This time around I'm focusing on purely functional additions, next up are the IDS drive upgrade and  the Traxxion dynamics front end.

The Gecko Bike ('07 SERK) has the following planned for it:
* Going in Monday for V&H Dresser Duals, Supertrapp SE slip-ons and a SERT/dyno tune.
* The auxilary driving lights and mounts are sitting in the garage awaiting motivation and time to install them.
* If the new Andrews cam works out that may be in the mid-future.
* When it's time to replace the AC a K&N will probably go in.
* Progressive 440 shocks.
* Possibly the HID lighting kit if the spots don't help enough.
* The usual slow progression of replacing fasteners and hardware bits.

I actually like the bike well enough now to leave it alone, but can't leave well enough alone.

I'll be interested in hearing what the IDS does for you as I've been thinking about that too.

Don,

Great idea for a thread.

Hmmmmm, let me think. What's next? Oh yeah, I plan on finding a way to keep the sumbitch from dribbling oil down the side of the case. Once we're past that seemingly way-too-difficult-to-figure-out problem, I'll find a way to get the HID in the spots and maybe bring the front end up to par with the rear end.

I'll be looking for work here in short order, so keeping checks in the check book seems like a good plan to me for the moment.

I only have a couple of things planned:

*Traxxion upgrade for the front end
*Set of matching hard bags

Anything else will be purely cosmetic to satisfy my OCD.  Unless of course Howie's bike outruns mine at HS, and then everything goes out the window and the bike will go straight to the shop to have top end work done.   :huepfenlol2:

I thought that mine was done, then along came the croc seat and bags, which I just couldn't pass up.  Motor runs great, bike looks good, the only other thing that is on my wish list right now is a chrome inner primary.  May do that over the winter.

Great idea for a thread.

Well, my bike is new so I have several things in mind (seems that when I get a new bike, I always start trying to make it like the last bike :nixweiss:).

*I have the "wing-tips" for the front of the saddlebag lids to put on.
*I just received the driver foot-board extenders and will get those put on in the next day or so.
*On order and arriving in a few days:  Nostalgic Saddlebag Rails #90839-94A - Tour-Pak Lid Organizer #53249-01B - Tour-Pak Air Wing #53936-03
*Will be adding a Power Commander/dyno tune as soon as available
*Will be changing out the handle bars as soon as the pull-backs are available for the 08 SEUC's
*Will be adding a trailer hitch (probably Hitch Doc hidden hitch)
*Thinking about doing the whole Hawg Wired system along with detachable TP bracket
*Traxxion upgrade on front-end
**And, probably a little more bling along the way

This should keep me busy and broke for a short while :orange: :apple: :orange: :apple:

I've about got Wanda June dressed the way I want her now, and have done much to improve the ergonomics for myself.  If the starter goes out, it'll get replaced with a chrome one, but I don't expect that...I do have the extended warranty though.

HID headlight is in the future.
Custom Dynamics front turn signals/running lights (to match the back).

That will complete the safety aspects of the bike.

Biggest thing in the future is motor work.  I'm heavy into the research phase of that, but it will most likely end up being:  Charcoal Powdercoated jugs/heads (SE103 heads, but highly modified internally); Diamond Cut same; Sized up a bit to a 107"; Gear drive cams to match whatever ends up being done to the heads; Different TB; Related parts to make things better and long lasting.  Not looking for numbers, but expect them to be in the 120's when completed. Direct Link final tune.  Nothing radical, but smoother, cooler, and quicker revving.  Compression releases are very likely.  If the runout is not within specs, all bets are off on what will happen.

I'm really quite happy with the bike as is, so some of this is still up in the air, but something must be done with the tensioners, so while I'm at it...you know the drill.  It's got nearly 18K on it now, so the worry is beginning.  I have a few bits and pieces collected for the above already.

Wouldn't mind the 6 speed, but that's not high on the list for me, as I tend to run the bike consistently from 2500 to 5000 rpm, and don't mind cruising in the 3200 range all day long when on trips.  If I found some kind of "deal" on the 6 speed, I might reconsider.

The main thing in my mind is that this bike is a keeper for me...she's going nowhere.  I was fortunate enough to get one with good paint, and have had no real issues with it, other than the recent regulator....chit like that happens.  Only other problem I've had was brought on by inept dealer service, and that was easily remedied...I don't let them touch the bike any more, unless it's a warranty matter like the VR.  Some may not like the 06 paint scheme, TP, etc, but I love it, and it is a unique look.  I'll just keep changing parts as they wear out, and ride the bitch.  Unless HD makes some major improvements to their QC, engineering, and committment to their customers, my next touring bike (an add to the stable, not a replacement) will probably be a German bike, like the K1200GT.  But Wanda June will always be there...

On the SEVrod (her name is Scarlet): Custom Dynamics front and rear turn signals; install the heaters for the grips; perhaps a 5 gallon tank and a different bag arrangement so we can take one or two night trips on her.  She's pretty, pretty, pretty damn sexy as is, IMO.  And she is just an absolute blast to ride now that the suspension matches the performance of the engine.  For the shorter rides we do, both Suzanne and I actually prefer hopping on the V.  With only 800 of that color built in 06, she's a keeper too.  I LOVE the paint on her!!  It's like having a Corvette in the basement to take when it's appropriate.
