So, the next chapter...

I finally got around to taking her to a dyno for a tune - the first since the build.  Last Saturday morning at the 105th, I had John Golden - Rolling Thunder Dyno -  perform a tune.  Up until now, I was running a downloaded program of a similar build...  (I am running a Power Commander)

Here is the short story...  I started with a base run of 98.26 HP and 101.42 TQ - and a really really really ugly fuel curve...  And I had been getting between 25 and 28 mpg.

So John first corrected the fuel curve - then worked with timing and such - and ended up with 120.78 HP and 122.21 TQ.  BUT, to use John's words, he was pouring fuel into her to get those numbers.  I had told John one of my goals was compromise of reasonable highway mileage with as much power as possible.  John suggested with this tune I would not get much better mileage as I had been achieving - it would be a smoother running tune, but not a highway runner.  So, I asked him to find the best compromise possible...

The end result was 110.07 HP and 112.15 TQ.  I am at 105 TQ from 2500 to 4000, then climb from there.  It pulls strong in every gear and - in the first two tanks of gas - averaged 38 mpg.  It no longer "lurches" at low rpm - it starts easy, idles smooth, is incredibly crisp thru the entire rpm range.  The improved acceleration is impressive.  And - I am no longer the first guy in my riding group to start looking for gas on road trips!

John also told me he is not in the business of making "happy" numbers.  He assured me his numbers were solid and real - not enhanced to make a customer feel good.  I had not met John before.  He is an old school kind of guy.  Plain spoken - no sugar coating in his words - and real down home sort of guy.  I liked him right off.

Bottom line is I am very pleased with the result of my motor build.  It is conservative compression ratio (less then 10:1) and should be very reliable.  The build has about 3500 trouble free miles on it - and is now tuned for my needs - reasonable power and reasonable highway mileage.  I am satisfied...  Here is the before and after printout...

Scott

I have two more tank of gas thru it now...  42mpg and 40mpg.  I have yet to see 200 degrees of oil temp (thermocouple in the pan).   :2vrolijk_21: ;D ;D

Wow!!!

Scott I have just read through all 16 pages of this thread.

Please let me add my appreciation and admiration along with all the others -  you have done a fantastic job - not just in rebuild, but the way you have taken us through it and shared your experiences. Thank you.

And I gather that Hoist has done something similar! Fantastic! May you both enjoy many miles of sheer bliss on your new mount - as Napoleon once said "Victory belongs to those who persevere"

I am a newbie to this site and to say that I am not mechanically skilled vastly overestimates the level of my incompetence - could I possibly send you a PM with some questions?  :confused5:

Awsome stuff Scott! Looks awfully familiar! Wow look at that discoloration. These motors are all doing the same thing. I should'a took pics of that junk. They got some set building motors like this. You're doing the best thing with this motor. I just hopes the bottom holds up now. I'm hearing that the bottom can barely take 96", let alone 110" or 120+ HP. How long you think our bottoms will hold up to the chit we're doing on top? Are the flywheels discolored also?

Now the fun starts. Selecting and collecting all the cool racing chit that goes in! Good luck with the build. Great you can do it yourself. Thanks for taking us along! :2vrolijk_21:

I used to think a 155 was extreme this is more like a diesel bore maybe need 4 plugs to fire it. I haven't heard of anyone using this engine yet but some one somewhere must know how they work. Lets see if we add nitrous and a turbo to it then it would be about right.

I pulled the top end apart yesterday - on the one year anniversary of building my motor.  I inspected the rocker arms, pushrods, lifters, cams, oil pump and checked crank runout again.

Everything looks virtually like new - like the day it was built.  There were very slight wear marks in the oil pump - nothing more then I would expect to see.  The crank runout was .0018 - the same as when I put it together a year ago.  Lifters also show very light wear marks on the rollers - but again, nothing more then you would expect to see a year later...  Cams look good - similiar to the lifters - very light wear marks.

So - nothing out of the ordinary...  I'll put her back together today!

-7 degrees below zero with wind chill of -35 degrees below zero - but the shop is a toasty 65 degrees!  No better way to spend the day then tinkering in the shop!

Was this something you'd planned to do over the winter anyway Scott?  Or just snowed in and curious?

It was something I planned to do over the holidays - mostly to check the crank runout and lifters.  My guess is they are the weakest links in the motor - and just for peace of mind and curiosity -- I wanted to take the time to look....

Great news Scott! My stuff was also in excellent shape after 13K, even riding for who knows how long with a bad lifter/cam. No sign of any type leak either. Glad to hear you'll need nothing but some gaskets! :2vrolijk_21:

I talked a dealer out of the "product enhancement" kit (including the heads) - and the kit includes gaskets - so for the few that I needed to do this - I took them out of the kit...  So it was a "no cost" inspection!   :2vrolijk_21:
