HD GPS. . . Can I download a map??
« on: September 22, 2007, 03:49:48 PM »

Ok, I've search the forum and I've come up empty handed. Maybe because this is a real stupid question... :nixweiss: I've got the 2007 Ultra which has the HD Radio/GPS unit all wrapped into one. Is there a way that I can download a destination from "MS Trips and Maps (w/GPS) or similar program to the frigg'n GPS unit on my HD.

I would like to plan a trip with some stop points along the way or move off the main highways etc... Most GPS's can hook up to a PC with usb and download a planned trip. I can't find nothing on the HD built in unit..is there a usb slot somewhere??  I mean the only way this HD GPS works is to put a city in and hit enter and it programs the quickest way to get there....usually a freeway or somewhere I don't want to go.  As far as I care it is rather useless!  And since I'm a guy, I hate to ask directions on how to get somewhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Forgive me for being stupid.....

To my understanding that is one of the limitations to the H-D stock GPS unit. It's only good for inputing destinations and then having it figure the route out for you. I don't believe there is a way to create routes in other programs and d/l them into that unit. :(

oh...I was hoping that was not the case.  :'( but, I guess it will give me a reason to buy a new one! Thanks Fired00d for the quick comeback. I do appreciate it.  Now the search for a versatile GPS that even I can understand and enjoy on a long ride. I do like gadgets, so the research begins.....Again thanks.

They are out there I found one. :D I purchased a Zumo 550 by Garmin several months ago and it is my first GPS. I've been very satisfied w/it, and it was easy to learn how to use/create routes and many of the other features it has.

From everything I've read, the HD GPS unit would be pretty much useless for my purposes...very limited in it's capabilities.

IMO, the Gamin Zumo 550 or the 2820 are the two best ones out there right now.

Well, looks like my research is getting real short... :huepfenlol2:  Sounds like a Garmin Zumo 550 might be at the top at the moment. Found it in the $700 range...not too bad since it's listed for over a grand on the Garman site. Thanks. Just got to convince the wifey why I need two GPS's and why the HD one sucks for what I need it for etc.... Sounds like the real battle here. . Thanks for the input.

I bought mine at buydig.com. Currently $655 plus free shipping. Don't remember how long it took to get mine but I know it was only a few days. Good luck, jj

Look at the Garmin GPSMAP478 if you want satellite weather.

Ok, guys. . don't get me confused. I've only got two brain cells and both are running a bit low and I think one is a bit flat. Thanks. I'll check that one out too! I probably need to know any suggestions on explaining to the wifey. Once I have that battle won, I'm home free.  :huepfenlol2:

Let her route out mystery ride(s) that you know nothing about and she can load them in the GPS. This way she gets to decide where you are going to ride, where you are going to eat, and you get to chauffeur her around. What woman wouldn't want that. :nixweiss:

Tell her that you can pull up nice places to eat/shop, push the button, and it'll take you right there.  Like a good Italian place with candlelight.

Plus it's a safety thing, as you can see the road ahead on the screen, where the next turn is, upcoming sharp curves, etc...

You guys good! Nothing like experience.....  I'm going to try it now while I'm getting her dinner plate ready, heck I'm going to do the wine thing too. Can't be too nice at a time like this. I'll get back to ya soon..... ;D

Ugly John,
You might want to check out the Garmin Quest2.  I have had mine for about 10 months now and love it.  Lots of great features.

I use the HD GPS as more of a safety net.  I program my destination and then explore all of the back roads to the destination trying to get lost on roads I've never been on heading in the correct general direction.  I thought the thing was going to start swearing at me when I was ignoring all of it's route recommendations recently....

Well, the dinner went great and I ended up drinking the wine. Anyway, it didn't work out exactly the way I planned. I ended up agreeing to let her buy a, of all things, a glass saw for her stained glass hobby. Even though my two brain cells were on alcohol (remember the wine) I thought I was making some headway. But, I screwed up somewhere and got off track(again remember the wine) and ended up ordering this morning a glass saw online. Am I good or what! Yeah right! Negotiating just isn't my cup of tea I guess.  :nixweiss:

As I'm finishing up the last of the bottle of wine this morning, I'm going to try another approach.  ::) I'm just going to buy one and beg her for forgiveness. Might be a few days sleeping in the garage, but it will give me some time to install it and figure it out. Might even read the manual if it goes past a couple of nights. I think it will be worth it in the long run....I think! I'm going to have the rethink this for a few minutes though. I'm sure there are consequences that I haven't thought of yet.  ;) Thanks for the input guys.
