Service Bulletin 324
« on: September 25, 2007, 11:27:30 AM »

I received an E-mail from another forum member who states Harley Service Bulletin 324 increased the flywheel runout tollerances from .003  - .010 and serviceable limits to .012. Does anyone know if this  is accurate?

Monitoring the other site, I am receiving conflicting info with regard to modifications / corrections. I taped the Motor Company Customer Service Rep stating changes were made to the flywheel to address the flywheel problem and my new motor had the new modified flywheel, new gaskets, and new jugs. On the other site I have received responses from individuals I have trusted in the past stating no changes were made. To say the least I am at a loss.

Changes shouldn't be that much of a mystery.  Any real change should carry a revised part number.  If for no other reason than for the MoCo itself to distinguish stock.  Look up the part numbers from your parts catalog of the primary internal components, add a revision letter to the end of them and see if the "new" part number exists by calling a parts counter and asking if they can order it.

If there's a revised part number there's a changed part.  If there's not a revised part number it is very very likely everything is the same as it has always been.  No need to rely on the rumors and wisps from elsewhere when just a bit of homework has the potential to inform better anyway.

Unfortunately, the one in the know over there isn't at liberty to reveal too much. I too trust what he says, but the official words out of Milwaukee are few and far between. This leads to a lot of speculation and frustration.

I think the problem is that since the motors are being swapped out whole, part numbers aren't readily available. Until they swap out a crank, and it carries a revised number, I haven't seen anything to indicate that it's any different than the part that is failing.

This whole black-box approach to handling the failures prevents a lot of information from getting out.

Even with complete exchanges happening under warranty I'd expect part number revisions to be reflected. Bean counters generally go nuts with undocumented revisions.  On top of that there is a different kind of liability exposure that might become present if there is a "secret improvement" not made available to the customers or the dealers.

Lots of conspiracy theories can be suggested for why changes might not be documented.  In practice they almost universally always are though.  Whether it be a physical or a process change.  I'd have to accept fair odds on a bet that no revised part numbers means no new or changed parts.  The only undocumented "change" I'd consider likely would be something in the assembly process.  Can't see how anything there is going to impact on the problems that have been seen though.

To quote the Harley Davidson Customer Service Rep assigned to my continued motor problems " You have the newest of the updated 110 motors". This quote was stated today at 9:34 AM PST. This, to me defines the 110 as a work in progress. However this is my opinion.

Regardless of what parts are revised, I don't have any reason to believe that they've figured out how to solve the problem yet. I think we're still in the "treat the symptoms" phase as the disease has not yet been identified. Hopefully a systemic cure is coming soon and the patient will live long enough to benefit from it.

I can imagine an ER "Code Blue" analogy would be pretty accurate for HD Tech Services right now. "Get a crash cart in here!! STAT!!!"

I would have had to ask the Service Rep to explain exactly what "the newest of the updated motors" means?  Specifically what was updated - from what to what??

I have been dealing with the Motor Company for years, of course I asked the Customer Service Rep to list the changes and to quote the Harley Davidson Customer Service Rep assigned to my continued motor problems " You have the newest of the updated 110 motors". Please be advised these Reps are given scripts / desk drops to answer questions that have been approved by their General Counsel. The Customer Service Rep on 09/04/07 stated modified / updated flywheel. gaskets, o-rings, and jugs, which I recorded.

Yeah - my question was "tongue in cheek" - like you I have been there and heard the scripted answers...
