Thinking about upgrade my rims and tires.
« on: September 30, 2007, 04:44:52 PM »

Well I just got my SEEG, and I have to go see a Dr. for my OCD!!!  I want to do something with my wheels.  I'm thinking about some Renegade South Beach 21" in the front and 18" in the rear with matching rotors and pulley.  I would keep it twin rotors in the front. Some say if you stick with the metzlers you dont have to modify the front fender.  I dont want to modify it, so I'm skeptical about the 21's, but damn they look good!  Also, anybody do a hidden antenna?

Various reports of more or less effectiveness with the hidden antennas.  I've had good luck using one called TuneTrapper.

There's a thread somewhere showing several guys different 21" applications.  Just did a quickie search and missed it.  But it's out there somewhere if you've got a few minutes to look for it.

Mike, I have all that you listed above on a 04 B/B

The front is 120/70-21 M/C 52V Metzler. It has 21,000 miles on it and still looks great.   Stock front fender will work, you might have to elongate the holes in the fender to allow for a little more clearance between it and the tire.

The rear is a 18x4.25" rim with a 160/60MR 18  Only getting 6100 miles out of that tire. No mods required to make this tire fit.

Problem with traveling with this setup.....No one carries these tires in stock. I have had 2 flats on the rear tire and have had to be trailered 200 miles home and the other time, I had someone bring me a tire 400 miles from home.

If you want to look good, this combo will do it for you, If you want to travel, I would tell you to stay stock.

ANTENNA...we put the Tune Trapper on the bike and it doesn't work as well as 2Lanes  does. Also tried the Dakota Digital and heard that they have been redesigned since I had one.

This is just my .02 worth. After your done post some pics!!

Well, just looking around, I see some with a 21" and a 120 tire, 18"s are running a 140 tire.  Not too much difference.

Well, thats another reason to look at the 18" then I guess.  I guess they would be out there more that the 21", since hd has an 18" wheels now.  I dont travel much, about once a year or so.  And it's usually to a rally of some sort.  I love the look, just want to make sure I will not hinder the bikes performance.

My opinion as to how the bike handles, looks and feels.....great.

Seat of the pants, the bike is a little top heavier than with the stock 16" setup.

Did you modify the fender at all?  Did you lower the bike anymore?

I have a stock fender that I had to elongate the holes in to get more clearance betweeen the tire and the fender for the front.

I made a new front fender from a Milwalkee Iron fender that raps around the front tire ALSO. Make sense...I have 2 fenders.

I like the stock fender when I have the tour pack on the bike and like the round fender when riding with no tour pack.

Front forks are still stock, with the only modification being a 13 rotor on one side only. Makes the front rim look larger. I did grind off the mounts from the lower to give it a cleaner look.

Rear has 440 progressive shocks. Personally I like the air shocks better, but that is just me. Does ride bettter with the 440's when you add wieght in the bags.

Some have said just to elongate the rear holes, did you do both front and rear?

On the stock front fender, I did it to both holes. Just a precaution.

So the 160 fits fine in the back with no mods?  Hogpro recommended a 150

Just got back from Myrtle Beach. Rode into the back lot at the Harley shop and the HHI guy stopped me. In our conversation he said that they no longer recommend the 160 for the rear.   They now recommend a 150 in either Metzler or Avon for the 18" rim and a 150 Dunlop for the 16" stock rim.
