Dan-

MTL=manual transmission lubricant

20w50-Even in Redline's description of this automotive oil it says for air cooled engines with big tolerances.

Their 20W50 Vtwin oil just came out rebottled this year at over $3.00 more a qt..

Bob

Thanks for the MTL identification...

You have to look at the difference between the V-Twin (motorcycle), and the auto oil. There are usually only a few percentages of a couple of additives that move an oil from auto oil into motorcycle oil. Most experts agree that that the difference won't be realized by most street bike riders and isn't really worth the extra money you pay. Here's one link, below, there are several. There's a document out there called the Oil Bible, has more that you'll ever want to know about oil!! Just do a search on Oil Bible.

I'm still using syn3 in the motor and transmission, is there much of a difference between that and redline and MTL, and is it any better for the motor and transmission.

Night and day difference. It has been noted that the motor will run cooler w/either Redline or Mobil in the crankcase, and the transmission will shift easier.

Throw away the syn3, it's a small step up from dino oil, but not much. I use Mobil1, Amsoil is rated at the top in all the charts I've seen, Mobil1 is close behind. It's just easier for me to find the Mobil1. I use Redline in everything else, but not tried their oil.

Sorry I forgot to add I use Amsoil in the crankcase, Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof in tranny, and Redline MTL in primary. Very happy w/these lubricants. :2vrolijk_21:

I run AMSOIL MCV in my crankcase and primary and Bel-Ray 85W140 Severe Gear in my transmission.  Can anyone tell me the advantage I'd gain by switching to Redline products in my primary and transmission.............besides the inconvenience of having an additional case of yet another lubricant taking up space in my garage?  Thx.

I have all that with my recipe.....and keep two types of oil on hand vice three.  Other than what the literature says, what's so good about this Redline stuff?  If it provides an advantage I'm not getting with the lubricants I use, I'd like to know about it.

Henry-

There is nothing wrong with the oils you are using.  None of us are oil experts (even though we like to think we are).  IMO, Amsoil, Redline, and Mobil 1 are the best products out there.  They all do the same thing.  When have we heard of an oil failure lately even using dino oils?  We all change the oil so often, most of us never get the benefit of what we are paying for.  Bob

Yep.......that would be me.  Just curious......more than anything.  I believe I mentioned somewhere else, that I can't see the point of switching from one good thing to another unless there is a performance increase.  Question answered.  Thanks.

The Bel Ray is good stuff, and so is the Redline, Amsoil, etc, etc.  Like Bob said, we all change the stuff too frequently anyhow.  I'll say one thing for the Redline Shockproof...the stuff is sticky as chit and pink as...well, can't go there.  I swear, I think you could run the tranny dry and the gears would still have the pink stuff all over them.  It has a distinct odor as well...

Now there's an open door....
