Redline Oils
« on: October 28, 2007, 05:29:39 AM »

I know a lot of us are running "HEAVY SHOCKPROOF" in our transmissions but is anyone using "Redline V-Twin Transmission Oil with ShockProof®" I was not aware of it until recently and it appears to be made for Harley transmissions.

Cheers

Looks like the specific products for V-Twins is a fairly recent addition to the product line.  The primary fluid is "similar" to the MTL product, and the trans fluid is "similar" to the Heavy Shockproof.  That's all the detail you get on their web site, so it's impossible to tell if there is an actual difference in the products, or if this is another case of someone just relabeling an existing product to promote it for a specific use. :nixweiss:  All I can say is that I have been totally satisfied with the Heavy Shockproof in my last two bikes, and I'll continue to use it until I use up the rest of the last case I bought.

Add to that bumping the price up $3.20/qt. I pay $9.75/qt (buying a qt at at time) for the HD Shockproof, and the website is listing the V-Twin Shockproof at $12.95. Until someone can show me that's it's worth the extra money I'm going to do like you Jerry. :2vrolijk_21:

Interesting how they describe it as being "similar to MTL" but it's $4.00 higher per quart. Maybe I'm a skeptic but I wonder if the only difference is the label on the bottle. :nixweiss: It'll be nice to get some more information and find out if it's worth the price difference.

It does seem strange but why go to all that trouble if it is not different? They could not be that dumb! as the legal issues would financially hurt them when they get caught!

I'd email Redline's tech support and see what they say.  The "Vtwin" aspect of it is news to me too as I run the std shockproof and MTL..   Probably just another way of making more money though.  Their Vtwin 20W50 is also a lot more than their std 20W50..  Probably just a little more of a certain ingrediant in an oil and they are greedy..

On a side note, I use 10W30 Amsoil in my Honda outboard and they came out with a marine version of the 10W30.  I emailed Amsoil, and he said to continue using the regular 10W30 as it was cheaper.  At least he was honest.

I haven't followed much of the oil propaganda in the past few years, but if the standard 20W50 oil you refer to is for automotive use, it's designed for watercooled motors and the temp its designed to working within is a lot different than an air cooled motor.  There could be a 60 to 80 degree difference in operating temps between water cooled and air cooled motors, especially our V-Twin bikes.

I would also think that the "V-Twin" rating is primarily directed to Harleys and or "other" air cooled V-twin bikes.  I doubt they could say "Harley" oil on their containers.

Just be sure that you're using cooling specific oil for your application.

Just my 2 cents of rambling information.

Hey, one question.... I've read this thread and I have to plead ingnorance on the subject, what is MTL?  I know you're all using it in the primary, but what does MTL stand for?

Now I'm done.

Thanks.

Dan-

MTL=manual transmission lubricant

20w50-Even in Redline's description of this automotive oil it says for air cooled engines with big tolerances.

Their 20W50 Vtwin oil just came out rebottled this year at over $3.00 more a qt..
